I have health anxiety and since I was 18 I have had a fast heart rate. I'm 26 now. In January 2021 I was rushed to hospital because my heart rate was 171 I spent the night there and after many tests they didn't find anything at all. I have a 24 HR tape which just showed sinus tachycardia and I had an echo done which showed my structure is fine.

My resting HR is 90
When I'm up and about in the house doing stuff it's 110
When I'm out walking in 140
If I'm out running it's 170
In my sleep it's 70-80
When I wake up in the morning it'll shoot to 100
My heart rate is never below 70, is this going to kill me?

I am 5ft 7 and weigh 86kg ( a year ago I was 107kg)

Anyone else have a heart rate like me? I'm so scared I lay awake at night crying.

Yes, yours is very similar to mine. My resting heart rate is slightly lower, but average is described as 60-90 so you're on the higher side, but not excessively so.

Walking average is pretty much the same as yours, looking at all my recent walks. Running, I average 180, and it's not that unusual for me to top 200 (and this is more of a plod than a sprint.) And while I'm a bit of a shit athlete, I'm perfectly healthy.

I sometimes get that anxiety heart-pounding feeling, but for me it's more that it seems my heart is beating harder rather than faster? This is most likely a physical symptom of the health anxiety, rather than caused by your heart rate alone, and like everyone else says, the right type & dosage of beta blockers can hopefully solve this.

@AutumnBrooke I'm on 5mg of Bisopronol. Seems ok, I just wish I can be like my bf and have a resting of 60 :'( I am so much more active than he is, it's so unfair :(

They won't give me propanolol because of my asthma :( xx

Sorry I'm confused. You said twice earlier you are on 5mg propranolol?

RhubarbCustardy · 06/06/2021 00:06

Maybe make a GP appt? It doesn't matter how silly you think your questions are. You need reassurance from someone medical. Also maybe he/she can give you some medication to help? Hang on in there but please speak to someone to put your mind at rest. They won't mind, its what they're paid for.

Does it help if you breathe slowly down into your belly IYSIM? I used to teach the Expert Patient course and that was something that was on the course.

Moxxi · 06/06/2021 06:57

Sorry @AutumnBrooke I meant Bisopronol. I have read into beta blockers so much I get the two confused. Every morning I take 5mg of Bisopronol

Seriously get your thyroid checked

Sweatycracks · 06/06/2021 08:30

I had some of this! My thyroid was overactive and I was anaemia and I lost weight despite eating more... and the heart rate was mad!

Please get your thyroid checked!

Lostandtired1 · 06/06/2021 08:34

@Shelddd

CBT will work.

Also in your case a beta blocker may be appropriate. Im not a doctor so not giving medical advice but a beta blocker will make it so it's more difficult for your anxiety to raise your heart rate. They're really effective at stopping the physical impact of anxiety. Also great that they have minimal side effects, not addictive and safer than traditional psychiatric meds like benzos and ssris. Might be worth just asking a doctor about it.

But CBT will be what cures this issue for you so keep pursuing that.

I had beta blockers for the physical aspects off anxiety (basically the fast pounding heart rate) only for a short period an they really helped Smile

Update OP?

with your heart its all about the rhythm, not necessarily the speed. If you have sinus rhythm then it is working perfectly, just a little faster than the average person.

the thing about normal heart rates is that they are identified by looking at hundreds of ‘normal people’ but for everyone who has a heart rate normally at 60, there is someone who has a heart rate normally at 90, which is how it can average to somewhere in the middle. You may just be a person who is normally closer to 90.

if you have had a echo, a heart rate monitor has said you are in sinus rhythm and you dont have high blood pressure, (more than 140 over 90] then I would say you are fine and you can safely ignore it. It will actually benefit you as you will have a higher bmi than others and burn calories faster than others. You will also have very efficient oxygen delivery to your muscles and brain, so you can probably run faster and react quicker than other similar people.

Sorry didnt realize this was a zombie thread

PLEASE look up POTS!!!!!!!!
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome!!!!!!
So many people are told it's anxiety and panic attacks, when its' actually POTS.
Highly recommend Dr Nicholas Gall, he is the best pots doctor.
With POTS all tests will come back normal and they tell you your heart is healthy and they can't find anything. My daughter also had a million tests and was told she is healthy and it's severe anxiety. Turned out to be POTS. You need a tilt table test to diagnose it.
