Did sertraline help anybody else that had insomnia? I’ve been prescrib d it for my depression and anxiety but am still unsure about taking it. However, if it will help me sleep I’m willing to try it. I can’t go on like this anymore, I lay awake for 8 hours last night. I’m physically and mentally exhausted.

I didn't have insomnia but it has made me sleep much deeper for sure. I was reluctant to take mine and had it in the drawer for months but after the initial adjustment period where my anxiety was slightly more intense, it's now been 3 months and the best thing I've done tbh. Im back to the old me and all areas of my life has improved 10 fold x

@funnyoldonion thanks that’s good to know. Over-tiredness and insomnia are both listed as side effects so I suppose I’m not going to know unless I take it. Glad you’re feeling better.

It did help me sleep, I would reach a point where I just couldn't keep my eyes open.

Hey OP,

I have been on 100mg daily sertraline for 2+ years and it's honestly changed my life, although I was prescribed it for anxiety and depression.

When I started sertraline I would take it in the morning and the first fortnight was awful. I suffered terrible side effects ranging from quite severe panic attacks (something I've never experienced), very low mood and insomnia. After a discussion with my Dr we agreed that I should change the time of day I take my pill and take it before bed to allow me to sleep through any side effects. Over 2 years later I still take my pill before bed and have had no further sleep disturbances or side effects. This wouldn't work for everyone though and as it's not a sedative, I don't know that taking it before bed would guarantee a good sleep.

I must be honest, I've never actually heard of sertraline being prescribed for insomnia before but have heard of Trazodone which is an old antidepressant that is now common in treating short term insomnia. I have also been on this medication in the past and can absolutely vouch for it, also Zopiclone is another excellent prescription sleep aid, again only recommended for short term use.

I hope the Sertraline helps you but there are plenty more options out there if not.

OP, I'm so sorry I just reread your post and saw you've been prescribed sertraline for depression and anxiety, not insomnia. Apologies, I'm reading this without my glasses and through very tired eyes.

In that case, I think you can be guaranteed of a good sleep. I found in my case that my insomnia prior to sertraline was due to my anxiety keeping me awake. As the sertraline begins to take effect in stabilising your anxiety/depression, you should definitely notice a vast improvement in your sleep.

My apologies again for my previous confusing post. Take care. Daffodil
