Feeling worse after increasing Citalopram from 20mg to 30mg

I was put on Citalopram 20mg for depression and anxiety. It really seemed to help . I know it's not the norm but I seemed to feel less low and much less anxious after only10-14 days. The GP said this is unusual but was encouraged by this and upped the dose to 30mg a month into treatment. I have now taken 30mg for a little over two weeks and I have actually been having more bad days than good again Confused.

I have physical conditions too which complicates things. I feel like I'm going backwards in terms of my mental health. I'm also having more side-effects than I had on 20mg... More fogginess (which I get usually but it's been even worse), periods when my heart feels physically heavy in my chest and like it's beating hard but not racing, shaking, increased nausea and diarrhoea at times amongst other things.
I could cope with side-effects but I can't fathom why my depression and anxiety would have become worse on a higher dose. It doesn't make sense... Will it pass? Is it normal for depression and anxiety to get worse initially on a higher dose? I'm just shocked because I felt an initial improvement on the introductory 20mg dose pretty quickly.
The only other things I can think: the increase to 30mg coincides with my best friend's dog passing away from Lymphoma Sad. I really loved the dog and have felt really upset about it, and upset for my friend who's broken by the loss. It's the second dog they have lost to cancer in 2 and a half years.
I also started a vitamin and mineral supplement, plus a fish oil about a week to ten days ago and wondered if this could have made things worse or be causing some weird interaction.
Any advice or help would be appreciated. I don't know whether to ask to go down to 20mg or to stick with the 30mg and hope this worsening in depression and anxiety is temporary.
Thanks for listening.

If you were feeling good on 20mg why did the GP up the dose to 30mg? That really doesn’t make sense OP. You should stay in whatever dose seems to be working for you and 20mg is the standard dose of Cit.

Thanks for replying HildegardeCrowe

I had been on Sertraline 150mg a day and that was causing weight gain and hair loss, and not really helping with anxiety or depression.
When I told her 20mg of Citalopram was helping, she said that, hopefully, 30mg would help even more. The plan was for me to take 30mg for a time and be reviewed to see if I wanted to stay on that higher dose or come back down to 20mg.
Maybe, with my depression and anxiety being bad and 150mg Sertraline not helping, the GP thought that I would do better on the higher dose of Citalopram. She was initially talking about building up to 40mg but I feel uncomfortable with the idea of being on the highest dose, especially as climbing from 20mg to 30mg has not gone well for me. I was just wondering if this increased anxiety and depression is a temporary side-effect of going up to 30mg and will pass, and that if I stick with 30mg I might in the end feel better on that dose?
It doesn't make sense to me that more is making me feel worse when I should be feeling better!
Thanks again for replying, I appreciate it.

No problem @Bettyhatesavocados. I’d ask her if you reduce back down to 20mg; as I said you should be on the lowest dose that helps. How exactly were you feeling on 20mg? It doesn’t make sense either that just because you were on a high dose of Sertraline you should be on a high dose of something else. Everyone reacts differently to SSRIs so go back to her and gave a discussion. It’s tricky getting things right but listen to your own body (and mind 😀).
