What happens at a GP appointment for anxiety?

  • What kind of questions will they ask about my anxiety?
  • Will I need a health check (e.g. blood pressure, BMI) before being prescribed anti-anxiety medication?
  • Can I request medication over CBT/talking therapy?

Thank you

Hey :)

My appointments have all been over the phone so far, so no physical checks.

She simply asked what I wanted to discuss, I said I'd felt anxious for 12 years and had finally been brave enough to reach out for help.

She asked about my symptoms and what kind of things I was anxious about. I had written notes beforehand, I'd recommend you do that as it makes it easier to make sure you get everything said that you want to say.

She then said she was prescribing sertraline and warned me not to drive as I may feel dizzy at first, then told me she'd put the prescription through and I could pick it up that afternoon, and she made me an appointment for 3 weeks later to see how I was doing.

The whole thing took less than 5 minutes.

Honestly, don't worry about it. Just be honest. They're there to help you :).

Oh and sorry - yes you can request meds over talking therapy. I said I was interested in it, but I needed something to level me out and give me the confidence to go ahead and do it. They were happy with that. 2 months later and I haven't done any talking yet but I am feeling better.

They won't make you do anything you don't want to do. My GP made it feel very much like it was my choice.
