Hi
Just looking for stories on mirtazapine the doctor keeps offering it to me and I keep refusing but I think its finally time to take something
I've tried sertraline and citalopram and both sent me absolutely crazy
Anxiety is high all the time with feelings of constant nausea and not sleeping well
Thanks in advance

@Reinventinganna thank you for that I'll make sure the fruit basket is full before I start so I reach for that rather than the chocolate

I don’t think it is. My psychiatrist was going to give me a prescription for it last week.

It’s the best drug for OCD out of all of them. I’ve googled it, and there’s plenty of info in the NHS about with very recent dates.

A certain size tablet was withdrawn l think, but it’s one of the best for treatment resistant depression.

I put on too much weight on it and it didn't sort out my sleep problems (mine are from PTSD). I had to come off it due to being nudged up into the obese category. I have since lost the weight.

HI OP are you still here? Just wondered how you got on?

Comedycook · 30/07/2021 15:10

It definitely helped with my anxiety and made me very sleepy. First few days I felt really groggy but that faded. It made me put on a lot of weight and I was overweight to start with. I stopped taking it mainly because I'd never struggled with my sleep despite my anxiety so didn't seem worthwhile

Hi everyone, i have been given these by the doctor, i also take citalopram and have done for years, im going through a very hard time and my anxiety is awful, my heart palpitations are horrendous.

Now having anxiety of course makes you scared to take new tablets, i do not want to put on weight, i need to lose it. Also im my mums full time carer, she is only has a few months with us (bastard cancer) i need to be with it, i can't be tired.
Do you think it's worth asking for anything else?

@NotPersephone

Made me gain 2 stone which made me more depressed. Also feel like it had a negative cognitive effect - probably because I was either asleep or stuffing my face with carbs.

Sorry but I found it a horrible drug.

Agree.

It was fucking horrendous

SilverGlassHare · 03/08/2021 20:50

It made me feel incredibly hungry so I refused to take it after a week or - they tried me on trazadone instead which apparently has a similar mechanism (not exactly the same but more similar than to SSRIs) but doesn’t stimulate the appetite. It sorted my depression, anxiety and insomnia, BUT I did get brain fog, fatigue and some memory issues, esp when I was on a high dose. The side effects do tail off after a while though.

Ive been on it 2 weeks, I also have been taking sertraline for years. Im taking it mainly for sleepy (Im going though a real bad experience at the moment). It helps with sleep really well - I do feel groggy next day but that it reading off). I dont think im eating anymore thank normal (but I can be quite obsessive about what I eat- I had mild eating disorder when I was younger). For me if I can sleep I can manage anxiety better.

@Muddlebubble I have taken Mirtazapine for nearly 4 years. It has been an absolute life saver. I started taking it after I had a breakdown and lost my job - it totally pulled me out of a pit of despair. Since I have been taking it, I have met a new partner, moved in with him, made new friends, am now halfway through a university course to train in a new career - Mirtazapine gave me the confidence to do all that.

I did put weight on. A lot, actually. About 2 stone. My life was so awful before that I didn’t care - the weight gain has so been worth it for me to get my life back. I’m currently weaning off due to the weight gain, but if I needed to go back on it in the future I wouldn’t hesitate.

I think it’s important to be informed before you take medication. My situation was so horrendous when I started it, that I didn’t care about weight gain. If your situation isn’t as bad as that (and if you don’t have sleep problems) I would cautiously suggest trying something else. If weight gain doesn’t bother you (because in my experience, it will happen) then Mirtazapine is a good choice.
