The first doctors appointment?

Stuck in the loop of being anxious to make a doctors appointment to discuss my anxiety Confused
What was your first doctors appointment like when addressing your mental health? What kind of questions did they ask you,and what was the outcome?
I have terrible anxiety that's essentially ruining my life, and my suspected depression (with LOTS of extreme mood swings) is absolutely exhausting. I'm frozen up on what to say, I struggle to talk about things I haven't thought through a million times, and I'm worried I'll say the wrong thing, or something misleading. I'm worried they'll think I'm an unfit mother or just think I'm overall insane.

I've had mental health issues for almost 8 years but I've never seen a professional about it, I'm very anxious about going to the doctors anyway,so it's just negative thought overload for me.

Any good stories and advice would be appreciated:)

I’m afraid I have no advice but didn’t want this thread to disappear without responses. Giving it a bump.

I put it off for 12 years. It ended up as a phone consultation that lasted 4 and a half minutes.

They just asked me about my symptoms, I summed it up, then she prescribed sertraline. I got myself into such a state about it and I really didn't need to at all.

You can do this!!!!

Hi OP, well done for actively wanting to seek support. Quite often that’s the hardest bit and not to be underestimated.

Bit different to you as I did previously get treatment for depression about 5 years ago so not exactly a first time appointment but last week I was able to log an appointment request on my surgery’s website and specifically asked if there’d be a way to have my consultation by email or similar as I just couldn’t face a phone or in person appointment - 24 hours later I had a prescription and help from GP, all done through texts with my doctor on the practice phone system.

See if that’s an option with your surgery, worth asking!

Well done for posting!

If you can manage to make the appointment and start the conversation, the gp should take over and ask you questions to find out what they need to know.

Mine usually asks me about things like my sleep, day to day life and how I'm managing, work, home life, etc. No idea if that's normal!

First step is to make the appointment. Then maybe writing some notes will help you in the appointment whether it's by phone or in person. They won't think you're an unfit mother. Just someone that is feeling unwell and asking for help.

Good luck @cosmikdebris
