Do you think SAD lights can help improve your mood?

I hope this is the correct place to post this.

This is usually my favourite time of year, but I'm feeling decidedly blue at the moment. Tearful and low. I am 48 and peri-menopausal, which I take some herbal supplements for that up to now have really helped over the past year.

I think it's partly hormonal, partly because of this difficult Covid year and partly the long dark days. So I'm keen to know if a SAD light could help?

I’ve had one for years, but to be honest I don’t think it really helps.

I'm not sure about SAD lights as such but I bought a luminous alarm clock last year and it's changed my life I have to say. It wakes me up so gently and the light is lovely, really warm. It's definitely had a hugely positive effect on my mood

That should have said Lumie alarm clock!

DaisyArtichoke7 · 22/11/2020 18:55

Yes absolutely 100%.

Thanks for all your thoughts.

I used a Lumie clock for years, but gave it to my teen DD to help her get up and it's worked surprisingly well. Also my DH gets up 90mins later than I do now he's working from home, so I try to minimise any light or noise first thing.

On balance, since the Lumie worked for me I think I will try a SAD light on my desk.

I use a SAD, you only need it for 15mins or so in the morning. It does help a little along with vit D.

BefuddledPerson · 24/11/2020 07:32

My view is it can't hurt so try. My lumie alarm clock worked well in the past.

My sister has one and says it works.

My doctor recommended one a couple of years ago. I was sceptical but saw a difference within a week.

Just wanted to thank you for all your comments and give a little update.

I've been using a slim SAD desk light for about a week, building up from 10 to 30/45 mins a day and I am definitely starting to feel much more positive and energised. I'm also going to bed a little earlier, taking iron and have done a bit more walking, (not too much though!) but in combination I feel this has all helped. Many thanks x

Is it possible for you to get outside for a brisk 10 minute walk in the late morning/early afternoon when the light is best?

I haven’t used a sad light so can’t comment but I have felt a benefit from changing to brighter bulbs downstairs but also softer ones in the bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs.
