I did want to do it without as I have been on them for 6 years on and off and going back on them only prelongs the ineveitable. I have only been off them about 2 weeks for goodness sake. I am patheitc but I also know I have every justification for being depressed but it all sucks.

you are not pathetic

you are ill. And when we are ill we sometimes need to take meds. It took me a Loooong while to accept that but I know now that that is true

TheMadScaryHouse · 17/10/2007 18:15

Hi I've just popped in from another 'feeling depressed' thread so I hope you don't mind me adding my thoughts on this subject. I've been take AD's continuously for the past 10 years (different ones) and will happily take them for the rest of my life if I need them because at the moment I'm achieving things that I never thought were possible if I need to be on AD's to do this then so be it. I have many physical illnesses and would never stop taking my medication for those. Taking AD's doesn't make you weak or a failure IMO asking for help when you have mental health issues takes real courage.

I also agree with TheMadScaryHouse yes I take AD's but in conjuction with the fantastic help I have received from my local Community Health Team (they have been a life saver literally) in my area you can self refer and asked to be assessed without a GP referral. Sadly there is still a stigma attached to mental health illnesses perhaps this is why some people would rather try and go it alone.

Not sure if thats helped in anyway because everybodies different but I'll leave after this post and a half

My GP isn't interested in letting me stay on them for years.

Says it isn't good for me or the kids to do that.

NAB - just one more thing and I'll butt out. My friend has seen several GPs in the last few years due to moving.

She says that apart from the one she has now, they all, on finding out how long she'd been on ads, said well we'll have to see about weaning you off the ads. She's the expert of her illness having suffered from clinical depression since her teens and now knows to knock that idea on the head as soon as it arrives.

GPs are by definition generalists. If you have one with a special interest in mental health then you are lucky, if not he/she may not be the best person to get advice from. My friend gets good help from her CPN as well as her present GP.

morgansauntie · 17/10/2007 19:07

After reading my post back I've noticed AD's can affect your spelling amd grammer

morgansauntie · 17/10/2007 19:11

My GP only hands out the repeat prescription my psychiatrist prescribes the AD's I do not think a GP can influence what a psychiatrist does unless they start arguing over it which isn't going to help the patient very much.

TheMadScaryHouse · 17/10/2007 21:25

I have mailed you

TotalChaos · 17/10/2007 21:31

NAB3 - depending on your history of past episodes of depression, there may be a good clinical argument for you staying on ADs longterm - as the risks of a serious relapse are greater than the risks of side effects etc of being on an AD that works well. something a psychiatrist is more likely to know about than a GP.

NAB3 · 18/10/2007 08:05

TheMadScaryHouse Coule you resend pls as my box was full. Thank you.

Do you think I should see another GP, rather than the one I have seen for the past year plus?

Hi e-mail re sent.

I would have thought that your GP should have referred you to the mental heath team, as they are the experts on this as people have previously said.

NAB3 · 18/10/2007 10:27
