Does quitiapine cause serious weight gain?

I’ve had it with anti depressants. They all make me worse, but I’ve got severe GAD, depression and insomnia.

Psych suggested low dose quitiapine but I’ve heard terrible stories about weight gain. And I’ve had enough of the Wright gain with antidepressants.

Anyone?

I've got to admit that I suffered a huge weight gain on Quetiapine - when my medication and diagnosis was reviewed by a psychiatrist rather than the crisis nurse prescriber he did point out it is used to stimulate the appetite in some dementia patients so my rummaging through the cupboards in desperate hunger wasn't surprising!

It does make you want to eat carbs and sugary things, thence it causes weight gain from the extra calories. If you are going to stay on it, be prepared to take the extra steps to avoid putting on weight. Celery sticks and carrot batons for snacks, not junk food. I am on quet and still don't follow the advice I've given you. It makes me ravenous for crap!

This is my fear, although it’s a very low dose for anxiety.

I ate my head off on most anti depressants. Some worse than others. I was hoping this wasn’t going to be too bad.

I put on 50kg in 8 months on it. Mostly from the med making me eat tons of crap but I was also so ill I was eating crap anyway which didn’t help. Not that it had any effect on me though. But I was on top dose of it .

Hmmm maybe not then. I’m sick of fucking meds that make you eat.

I weighed 91/2 stone until l started on them. Now l weigh 13 1/2

Quetiapine can also affect the way the body processes glucose, so it’s a bit of a double whammy-weight gain from the overeating and the metabolism issues. Diabetes can be a real risk.

Even at low doses?

I've always struggled with my weight. I've been on 150mg Quetiapine for 6 months and although I'm size 16 I haven't put any more on since starting it.
It has calmed me down and helped me sleep so I'm happy with it as I was also worried about gaining with it.
I also take Venlefaxine and Mirtazapine which is known for weight gain but I haven't gone up any more.

IME quetiapine is one of the worst for weight gain. All the antipsychotics seem to be awful for that side effect.
I've been on various psychiatric meds for about seven years. At one point I'd gained 5 dress sizes. Down to a 14/16 currently after another change but I was never above a 12 before I had to be medicated.
It's so frustrating and I found it made the depression aspect of my bipolar worse because my self esteem was shot.
That's just my experience.

Yep, went up two dress sizes on it and it feels impossible to lose weight on it too BUT it is absolutely worth it to feel human again. I'd rather be fat then skinny and in the incredibly dangerous place I was before.

Mirtazapine is horrendous! How could you not put weight on with that?

Paroxetine+ Mirtazapine 3st in a year
Amitryptiline lost count of weight gain
Sertraline 3 stone
Fluoxetine 2 stone
Chlomipramine 1stone in 3 weeks

Sick of them all. Was hoping this might be easier!
