I have been taking a 100 mgs since May and it’s been working well . But last 7 days I have had unbearable anxiety not depression . Can it stop working ?

I dont think so, I've been on 100mg for four years but I still get anxious, down and tearful sometimes but I would be much worse without sertraline, I hope you feel better soon xxx

Thank you ! I suppose it’s not a cure all . Gp is reluctant to up dose

Have you had anything else other than antidepressants ? CBT, counselling ?

Ahbump · 07/11/2020 20:13

@ FippertyGibbett no I haven’t as of yet . Counselling has helped in the past though

I think you need to go back to the GP and see what else they can offer, and say that counselling has helped in the past.
Have you looked into mindfulness ? My hubby thinks it helps him.
It’s finding what suits you.
Good luck.

Some people are more sensitive to brand changes...

Mine felt like it stopped working on Dr Reddy’s and Ranbaxby Sertraline. My pharmacist changed it to one that I previously felt was having the right effect and said to stay on that brand.

Have you had a brand change?

mynameiscalypso · 07/11/2020 21:49

100mg isn't a particularly high dose so it might be that you need to go up a little. FWIW, I was on it for about two years and then came off it for a while. When I went back on it, it's not been as effective and I've had to go up to a pretty high dose (250mg) to benefit. That said, people do just have up and down periods as part of normal life and sertraline doesn't necessarily prevent that. I hope you feel better soon Thanks

mynameiscalypso · 07/11/2020 21:49

Oh sorry, I totally missed that you said GP is reluctant to up the dose. Ignore that then.

Ahbump · 07/11/2020 22:37

@FippertyGibbett I have spoken to GP they said give it a week and if not any better they will think in what they can do . I do have some beta blockers I could take to ease things . Mindfulness is something I have tried but not helped me . I have an assessment booked with a private counselling next week . Thanks for the suggestions really helpful !

@NameChange84 hmm interesting how would I know ? I don’t pay massive amounts of attention to the brand but the packaging has changed could I check with pharmacist about this do you think ?

@mynameiscalypso I think they would but not yet and to be honest the side effects were pretty horrendous so I don’t want them to unless I have to . They seem to think 100mgs is a high dose ?!

If the packaging has change then there is a good chance the brand has changed. It might be that you don’t react the same to the latest one. You can call your pharmacist and request a certain brand (or say please never give me a certain brand).

donquixotedelamancha · 07/11/2020 22:47

I found it stopped working. Each time I upped the dose and it worked for a while but even on the maximum it didn't keep going.

Ahbump · 08/11/2020 09:42

@NameChange84 I’ll look into that more from my thinking it was one packet for 3 months and then changed .

@donquixotedelamancha Ah did your GP change you to an alternative?

Yes, I'm on venlafaxine now. At first I thought I was better on the sertraline but seems to be a little better on a medium dose.

It's very personal. For instance I lost weight on sertraline where many gain but I'm constantly hungry on venlafaxine.

I'm never sure what is the pills and what is circumstances. I'm always much better when I have chance to do lots of exercise (I hate exercise but I've definitely proven to myself there is a biochemical effect).

I don't see how, the ingredients are the same.

Not 100%. Speaking to my pharmacist, he suggested that each generic is slightly different and a small percentage of people react badly to some of the fillers used.

I wasn’t alone in my experiences

There are hundreds of similar stories out there and both my pharmacists and GP were aware it does happen
