Hiya
I’m new on here and wanted to know if anyone could help me out.
Long story short my husband has anxiety and depression and is on citalopram 20mg but he has a fear of eating and it getting stuck. There was an issue recently where his eating was back to normal and then we ate kidney beans and the skin of one got stuck like by his tonsils and since then all he will eat is soup.
Really could use help with this anything at all would be appreciated really hate seeing the man I love struggle to the point of panic over food.

Thanks Smile

He needs to see his GP and get referred for therapy. There really isn't anything else you can do for him.

I agree. He needs to see his GP. You can’t solve this for him.

It can be very difficult to eat when in the grip of depression. I had this and swallowing felt so hard. I lost a fair bit of weight

I think this needs to be addressed on two levels - trip to GP to check whether level of citalopram is right and whether he is getting dangerously thin

You could also suggest he asks gp for referral to eating disorders clinic

In case it helps I eat normally again now and have come past the depression. This must be very hard for you Flowers

Your husband needs specialist, professional help. You are not qualified to provide that but you can certainly help him access the help he needs.

The GP is the right place to start and I'd be wanting a gastro specialist to rule out a stricture in his oesophagus as well.

I had hypnotherapy for this issue.
I had a fear of things getting stuck in my throat so tended to overchew until the food was near enough liquid. Meat was the worst because it was chewy.

I had about ten sessions and I'm fine now unless I get really stressed. Good luck
