Am I with the right therapist?

Therapy/counselling sessions are 50 minutes a week. I talk about lots of things and she was say things like “I wonder how that made you feel when...” etc but it doesn’t feel like anything is going anywhere if that makes sense.

I know some don’t offer solutions and just listen but I feel I need more than that that to get to the route of my issues and work on coping strategies.

Do I need to look for a different style/type of therapy?

It sounds like you're getting counselling, which is exloratory in nature. It sounds like you're in need if being challenged a little. Are you able to share what it is you're trying to achieve?

Therapy and counselling are 2 different things, its sounds like you're having counselling which can be helpful but not what you're looking for. I'd look into different types of therapy and look for someone who specialises in the type of therapy that you feel would best help you. Ask your current therapist for recommendations, they wont be offended.

Different types of therapy work for different people and problems. It sounds like you may prefer a more structured, direct form of therapy. Maybe have a look for a Cognitive Behavioural therapist on the national CBT register www.babcp.com.

I had a therapist like that. I had specifically said I needed CBT when I got in touch with her and she said she could help me. After three or four sessions of her just looking at me with her head tilted and getting cross when I didn’t know what to say in the silences I emailed to say I was going to try something else. She emailed back, very dismissive and implying that I hadn’t been trying hard enough! She was on the BACUP register but I wouldn’t recommend her to anyone - she was awful and seemed to have an angry air about her. Thankfully I’ve found a brilliant CBT therapist now who helped me from the very first session. She was recommended to me and interestingly she isn’t actually on the BACUP register but certainly knows her stuff and is brilliant. Good luck in finding someone who can help you.x
