Citalopram day 1 - diary

I am very anxious to start this, it’s been in my cupboard for weeks. But I have now started feeling suicidal so I have nothing to loose by giving it a try. I’ve also been given some diazepam to take as and when required until this kicks in.

So here we go day 1, just took the Citalopram and a diazepam and feel relief that maybe this will help me. I’m scared very scared of side affects but feel so low that I have no other option but to give this a go.

Don't want to read and run. I can only say it worked fir me and my daughter, and quickly too. In fact I don't know anyone who has had bad side effects.
If you're concerned then make sure you're with someone. Company helps, and is a distraction.
It's no exaggeration to say citalapram saved my life. And I'm off it now, after taking it fir 3 years. I hope it helps you.

I was a zombie for a few weeks but OMG the difference it made to my mental health is huge!

I’m on citalopram too, it takes a while to adjust but it’s so worth it! If it doesn’t work for you after a few weeks don’t panic, see your GP and try something else. I didn’t get on all that well with mirtazapine.

I take citalopram, I'm on the max dose. Negative side effects for me were sickness and headaches. The good thing is they wore of quickly and it helps quite a bit. Good luck!

Good luck.
I’ve taken citalopram for a while now and the difference it makes to my mood and mental well-being is immense.
I did find I felt sick after taking it to start with so I switched to taking it at bed time to sleep through the nausea.
Hope you start to feel better soon (for me I had 6 weeks at 20mg and felt no different but when it was upped to 40mg I felt a difference after 3 weeks).

Dustymillar · 27/08/2020 15:53

I took Citalopram a few years ago for depression and anxiety.

I started on 10mg about 6 weeks ago and last week upped it to 20mg after speaking to my GP. My problem is nausea and dicky tummy.

I feel hungry but the thought of eating and cooking turns my stomach.

Is anyone else feeling like that and can you remember if it passed???

Stumpedasatree · 27/08/2020 16:03

@Dustymillar, for me it took about 3 months on 20mg until the nausea passed. I had no appetite either though!

Nausea is very common when starting Citalopram, it usually passes after a few days to a couple of weeks maximum.

I was misdiagnosed and really shouldn't have been on SSRI's. Citalopram did absolutely nothing at all to me. No discernible effect or side effects whatsoever. May as well have been a sugar pill. Fluoxetine on the other hand Confused Nausea, clenched jaw, hypersexuality, brain zaps, sweats, no improvement in mental state at all.

The only thing I've ever been prescribed as an anti-depressant or mood stabiliser that actually had any discernible medical effect was Lamotrigine, but even then it functioned like a mild sedative, and it made me feel really detached and totally devoid of emotion. It was awful and I came off it after three or four months.

@Dustymillar

I have hazy memories of feeling like that on Fluoxetine. It was a long time ago, and I had at least three periods where I was taking it on prescription. I definitely remember being 'off' food at least once.
