Bipolar 1 - manic episode on way - can it be controlled

My DSis has Bipolar 1. She has a major manic episode ever few years (last one 2 years ago), which seems to end up in a psychosis every time and with her needing hospitalisation. That is always hugely stressful and traumatic for her and all around her. She lives with our very elderly and vulnerable mother in another European country. We tend to congregate at their house once a year to celebrate our mother's birthday. My DB has arrived today and let me know that she is showing all the signs of another manic episode - but still early stages. She has stopped taking her meds. Anyone know if it is at this stage possible to help her get it back under control before it's too late? I don't yet know how receptive she is to getting things back under control... Anyone with personal/family/partner/friends experience?

I am so worried about them both and selfishly also worried about not being able to be there to see my mum on her birthday because my DC are too small to be exposed to this and a visit from us would massively increase my DSis stress levels.

Well if she’s stopped taking her meds and is beyond having insight to see that this will lead to her becoming seriously unwell, the family should get help from her crisis team, or doctor. They shouldn’t wait if they can see the signs, pussyfooting around isn’t helpful.

Thank you. We are trying to get the necessary support right now. I have the feeling it can't be stopped, but was hoping someone might give me some hope or a clear idea that it will definitely run its course now. Clutching at straws. My mum won't be able to cope with this (last time was already really pushing her to the limit). I am just feeling very helpless from here.

It’s difficult to say as individuals are all different. My husband hasn’t had a manic episode requiring hospitalisation for 20 years, although there have been a few times when I could see him getting into a higher mood. I always say straight away if I notice anything and he listens because that’s our deal.

Thank you MyPersona. Does your husband ever stop taking his medication?

No he doesn’t because when I married him it was on the understanding he does everything within his power to stay well. I would see stopping medication as a sign of high mood, as he clearly wouldn’t be thinking straight. I know that some people do this though. I hope you manage to get some help.
