How to figure out what counselling I need?

Hi. I've come to realise that I have issues from my early-mid teens that have never been dealt with. Now I'm a parent, I desperately want to do better than my parents did. I want to model confident behaviour so I need to improve my self-confidence. I also need to work out whether to tackle my father or learn to let it go.

I've had fits and spurts of counselling over the years but clearly it hasn't really worked, how can I figure out what sort of therapy would be best for me? I'm sort of drawn to CBT because it sounds quite pragmatic but really don't know. Any personal recommendations, or is there a "beginners guide" online that I can look at? I have been googling but everything either reads like a sales pitch or is completely noncommittal, which doesn't really help.

Thank you in advance

CBT is more behaviour based, I think it wouldn't be the best fit. I've done it and it was brilliant for phobia and anxiety but didn't do much for my low self worth or depression. I'm now doing Psychodynamic therapy and that seems more helpful for that. My therapist labels his style as Integrative and I do think it makes a difference as he is compassionate but does gently challenge my ideas if he thinks I am not seeing the situation clearly or writing off options that are actually realistic, which is useful.
