Support for Newly Homeless with MH Issues

I have been contacted by an old friend who has been kicked out of his mum’s house after having a panic attack. He is autistic, and suffers from depression. He has no money, nowhere to go and lives in the NE of England. He posted some suicidal comments on Facebook, so I reached out to him.

I’ve signposted him to different text, web, phone crisis resources and have spoken to him about some of his issues, and he has found shelter for tonight. He has nowhere tomorrow. I can book him a hotel (Are they open in the UK?), but not indefinitely, and I don’t know what to do.

At the moment, where does he go? He is vulnerable and I am concerned. I looked at maybe putting a flat deposit down, but he has no income as he just graduated and has not yet found employment. In the current economy, it’s unlikely he will immediately - especially given his current mental health state. I’m lost, and I’m worried about him. If anyone has any advice or guidance, I’d be so grateful.

Try Shelter for advice or the council?

You can’t do it for him, I’m sorry, he needs to contact the council and tell them he’s homeless now

Okay, thank you. Sorry if this was an obvious question, it’s just been many years since I lived in the UK and I have no idea if things are different with Coronavirus now. Am I putting his chances of getting housing at risk if I book him into a hotel? Is it even possible to get a hotel room in the UK now?

He needs to contact the council Homeless prevention team. It will be on the council website. They have a duty to find him somewhere off the streets. The council should also put him in touch with the benefit services. he will need to make a Universal Credit claim. He can try phoning citizens advice too. None of these agencies are doing face to face at the moment though.

Thank you so much. In the end, I got him into a half finished property we own and had planned to let out. It’s not ideal as it’s in the South, but he will at least be safe, fed and dry. I’ve signposted him to these resources, but most importantly have had him referred to local mental health support and a good family therapist. Thank you all 😊
