The Mirena coil

Would a coil take a year to settle? I’ve had it in for 3 years now and I’m sure after the first year I started to change; strange headaches, my moods are just awful, weight gain. I get so confused because I keep thinking it may have nothing at all to do with the coil. Who knows? I’ve decided to have it removed in august by my gynaecologist. They think they are the best things to have don’t they? Are they? I really can’t tell but I’m sure I’ve changed so I shall go ahead with the removal. Anybody else feel the same?

I had 2 mirena coils one after the other so 10 years in total, I cant know for sure that it was the cause but I suffered some awful periods of anxiety during that time and also completely lost my sex drive.

The other thing I'm pretty sure it caused is some really attractive thick chin hairs.

I had it changed at the start of March to a copper coil, I think it's too soon for me to have noticed any major differences but I'm getting on okay with the copper one so far.

I had similar problems with the Mirena. The mood swings i had were intense but I had this with all contraception and in despair i decided enough was enough and went au naturel! I felt better almost instantly but have been getting bad peri symptoms lately. The gp suggested the coil. Ah well! Grin
Good luck op

It's hard to tell isn't it. I feel like when mine comes out in August or before mentally I will feel better that no hormone is passing through my body. Funny how all consultants say they are absolutely fine and there are no effects. My periods were heavy prior to the coil but I had an operation to remove polyps so should be ok now and every friend or person I have spoken to about a coil has said negative things. The coil has stopped all periods for me which is great but I'm still sure I'm having side effects so out it will come x

Is it uncomfortable being removed?

Sorry to threadjack, been trying to get a removal appointment. How did you manage? (My gynaecologist is private but her premises are now being used by the NHS)

Juicegoose · 04/06/2020 17:54

@PurBal, when I was begging to have mine removed, I ended up having to go to the GU clinic - they were the only ones who took me seriously about the dreadful side effects, and removed it without hassle. Give your local one a call to see if they're open at the moment.

It’s no worse than a smear test to remove. Certainly much better than having it put in! I had every symptom going with the mirena. Weight gain, spots, constant bad mood, complete loss of libido. Stuck it out for 8 months. The practice nurse at the gp took it out.

Growingboys · 04/06/2020 17:59

Removing it is fine.

I'm on my second Mirena and haven't had a single problem with it.

This is the thing I just dont know whether its all in my head and I'm blaming the mirena coil? I feel like a want a break as I've had it for 3 years now.

I've had mine in for 5 years and I love it, apart from 6 months of spotting I've had no problems. I was told that the hormones are minimal and stay in the womb.

I had one for less than a year and was considering having it removed when it fell out!

It completely killed my sex drive and I had some low moods and anxiety that I hadn't had before or since.

On the other hand my older sister had 2 in a row and loved it.
