Sertraline PLEASE help

Please can I get some help as I am losing my patience…

I am taking Sertraline – it works well for me.
I have tried different ones- and Sertraline seems to work best.

BUT the side effect that I have is excessive sweating- to the point that last summer I had to stop taking it (and I felt really bad)
Feet, hands, back, FACE
At night I feel like drowning in my own sweat which is horrible and I feel dirty all the time.
I have been on it for a long time- and it doesn't go away.

I googled solutions and Oxybutynin seems to solve that problem.

I just had a consultation with my GP and I honestly lost hope and feel like crying.

He said that sweating is not a side effect of sertraline and he cannot do anything- only advise not to eat spicy food, use deodorant and Oxybutynin is American and it does not work like that in the UK.

He was googling side effects while on the line with me- I had a feeling that he has no idea about anything especially medical issues.

Has anyone experienced similar problems?

Yes, I take sertraline and sweat massively at night now. I'm sure it is a side effect.

Juliecloud · 05/05/2020 22:54

I am quite a sweaty person anyway, but Sertraline does make it worse for me. For a long period I got night sweats nearly every night, my clothes would be soaked through. My GP sent me for a blood test to rule out early menopause! That came back negative, and my GP was certain the issue was Sertraline. I am still taking it, I'm on the maximum dose, and I have found that the excessive sweating has eased off. My night sweats have become less frequent, yet my dosage hasn't changed.

You have to assess if the benefits of Sertraline outweigh the side effects. If it doesn't then there are many other medications that you can try instead. I would go back and try to see another doctor, or really be firm that this side effect is having a negative effect on you and you would like to try something else.

I've just checked the leaflet that is included with my tablets, and it says 1 in 10 people may experience increased sweating. To be honest, I am not surprised that your GP has discounted your side effects, GPs do not have intimate knowledge of side effects for every medication. You could try asking a pharmacist for advice, they are much more qualified in medications, it is their job after all!

Makes me sweat like a beast but only at night. What time of day do you take it? I take mine first thing and wonder if the night sweats are withdrawal? Your GP sounds shit, can you try talking to another?

Yes! I've always been sweaty but it has been worse in recent months and I made the connection with sertraline recently. Going for a walk and having sweat literally running down my back - horrible. It also leads to horrible spots on my chest back.

Ash a pharmacist. Drugs are their specialty, if there's a solution, they will know.

I am really scared that it's something more serious as I am NOT a sweaty person. Now on sertaline though my fringe is greasy from the sweat. The back of my legs are wet and my cleavage is dripping!

I cant stop gooling though that it's a sign of something more serious ...
