Please tell me about experience of adult taking ADHD medication. I'm scared!

In some way, I'm fine with not taking any medication. My symptoms aren't too severe - possibly because I'm a female. I've done some retained reflexes therapy which also helped to bring down the mood swing massively in the first few months. Apart from this, probably the awkward social situation bothers me the most. But as long as I'm at workplace, I feel being respected and accepted (most of the time).

So personally, I'm reluctant to take the medication fearing it would alter how I have been my whole life. But DH has been bothered with various traits of my ADHD condition for years. The communication between us frustrated him as he thought I didn't listen to him and disrespect him. Even after we finally found out the cause of most of these issues down to ADHD, he still can't entirely let me be.

The other day, when I was complaining some other mum in my son's school started ignoring me/avoiding me for no good reason. I was quite saddened by it. DH brought up the topic of having medication again. He seems to think if it's the only way I can do something to change the situation, then I shall go for it. I felt almost like if I didn't, he'd think I'm to be blamed for anything that's not right. I also don't think he's done much research on any potential side effect. So all in all, I felt being left alone scared.

On the other hand, I have been thinking to help my son who's 7 and obviously has ADHD too. I'm kind of thinking if one day I want to explore the route of medication for my son, shouldn't I try it first myself?

But I'm really scared... Can anyone share some experience? I'm over 40 and was diagnosed when I was in late 30s.

I was prescribed Xaggitin in Feb 2019 (was 25 at the time) with high functioning ADHD diagnosis and wow it changed my life. Was in and out of hospital with mental health problems and that tablet seemed to help me figure myself out

Took Elvanse for a couple of years in my mid thirties. Made life unrecognisably easier.

I had to stop owing to pregnancy/BF. Whilst I miss it, even just a couple of years on it have slightly required my brain to teach me how to focus better.

An acquantance of mine was diagnosed after her son got his diagnosis. She gave a day by day account of what happened to her:
from being able to write and follow a shopping list to redecorating her flat. She recieved self-management courses and other help as well. Courses she would not have been able to follow without medication.
And it did wonders for her self esteem from shit person and shit mother to normal human being with treatable manageable problems

I take Modafinal and it’s a life saver. Only side effect is insomnia so I’m careful not to take it too much. It’s the only thing that makes me feel halfway normal or lets me function.
