Could A&E sign me off work

I’m having a terrible few days with my mental health - have been sobbing uncontrollably, anxiety levels are sky high and I’m struggling not to self harm. I saw my therapist last night who suggested that I ask the GP to sign me off work for a few weeks to give me a chance to stabilise.

I phoned the GP at 8am this morning and was offered a callback between 2 and 3. They haven’t called. I phoned at 3 to check they had the correct number and they said the doctor was in clinic and couldn’t speak to me.

I don’t know if I am going to get a call back or not and I haven’t actually phoned in to work today am just a no-show. My emergency plan with my regular psychiatrist is to go to A&E if needed. Could the A&E doctor write me a certificate? I’m not seeing my regular psych until Saturday and he’s private not NHS so I don’t think he can sign me off himself.

I know that things are escalating for me and have previous history if unsuccessful suicide attempts and long periods of in patient treatment. Am trying to practice the self care I’ve been taught over the years but don’t know what to do if my GP doesn’t phone today.

The callback system is my practice’s way of dealing with all non-routine appointment requests and the doctor isn’t supposed to have any other duties that day so don’t know why they are in a clinic. There are no routine appointments available (they only release 3 weeks at a time and every appointment in the next 3 weeks is taken)

They won’t where I am, but you’d usually be expected to self-certify for the first 7 days anyway - would that cover you for a bit? You’d just need to contact work somehow, or get someone to do it for you. Then your psych can write you a certificate on Saturday, I’ve had one from a private psych before.

I hope it lets up for you soon Flowers

No they don't where I live either and you have to have been off for 7 days before my GP will issue a note but not sure how yours works.

The nurse practitioner has just phoned me back. She can’t sign me off but has said she will go and speak to the GP between patients and explain the situation to him. She was very sympathetic and said she thought the doctor would be ok and would probably give me 2 weeks. Just waiting for her to call me back to confirm

Just to add, your private psych can absolutely sign you off work. Mine has on several occasions. He might even be able to do it today if you contact him/his office.

Take care of yourself Thanks
