Mirtazapine 30mg to 45mg

Hi everyone,

Long story short I was diagnosed with PND/Anxiety in November, my son is 9 months old now.
I was originally prescribed Sertraline but I couldnt tolerate it at all. The GP then gave me 15mg of Mirtazapine and within two weeks I felt totally normal. Unfortunately that only lasted for another two weeks. He then increased it to 30mg and I am am nearly finished week 7 of the increased dose. In the meantime I have been referred to a Psychiatrist, who told me to keep going until week 8, that it takes 6-8 weeks for the anxiety to go. I have seen incremental improvements in the last few weeks particularly, I even had a quite good week last week, anxiety was still there but much lower level, but the last two days the anxiety has increased again.
Overall I would say it is v v slowly improving, with the good days getting stronger and the bad days getting weaker. The anxiety is worse that the low mood.
I just am losing hope that I will be normal by the 8 week mark, as today is really not a good day. Should I go back to the Psych and request an increase to 45mg? Has anyone had a similiar experience to mine where the 30mg finally worked after so long? Or where they increased to 45mg and it did the trick?? Ive had very few side effects so far, really none to mention.

I am being as patient as I possibly can but my life has been on hold and Im really losing hope.

Any advice or reassurance would be so great!

x

@webby2 thanks, yes i am so impatient to feel better but this week has definitely been better than last and ever most days are better than the previous one.
Have you decided to make the jump to 45? I think it takes a good three weeks to get going but I do feel more calm now than I have done and hopefully will continue to improve. Xxx

I’m not sure, I was on 15 mg for 6 weeks and it worked great for first 4 weeks and then I felt anxiety returning so I increased to 22.5mg and been on that for 5 weeks. I tried 30 mg but felt sort of numb and sedated on it so I did 22,5 instead. I think I could try 30 mg now and see how I feel. Trying to give each increase a chance to stabilise before going up again. But I’m happy to take 45 mg if that’s what it takes to treat me xx

Ps like you, I couldn’t tolerate Sertraline and was so pleased with the mirtazapine as even after one dose I felt improvement

@winningwhilstlosing how are you doing these last few weeks? I’m just over three weeks on the 45 and do feel calmer but haven’t had many good days, just one or two... you’re a bit further down the line than me so I just wondered how you are feeling?
Xx

@webby2 sounds like you’re being v patient which is a good approach. I’ve noticed I’m feeling calmer now on the 45 but my mood is quite low at times and I don’t feel normal yet. Good luck if you do decide to increase xx

I’m really very impatient! Have been working on anxiety using the Dare technique which is helping as I don’t want to be on meds long term. Dare teaches you to accept the anxiety and it’s symptoms and the fear of being anxious gradually goes which breaks the cycle
Hope you have more good days next week xx

Hi I’m not a mum but just thought I’d let you know I’m on 30mg been on them just over 2 weeks , I’ve been on Zoloft before and they was horrendous , like I say I’m on mirtazapine 30 mg they was working great up to the last few days , anxiety been bad yesterday and today , I’m thinking of going to see my doctor to see if I can go on 45 mg , my 30s last about 6hrs then when I get up it’s effect has worn off until I take my next one at 3pm then I’m ok for the evening so that’s what’s making me to think I need I higher dose , mirtazapine do work eventually as I’ve had been on them before , they worked great to be honest , better than ssri,s , stick with them and I’m 100% confident you’ll feel great soon . Take care .

I use it for sleep, anxiety and to improve my appetite, I need to gain weight. I started on 30mg and now I'm on 45mg - they say that higher doses are less sedating for some people but that's definitely not the case for me. The higher the dose, the more sedatation. I had no trouble going from 30 to 45 but nothing improved until I got on 45. Once I started taking 45 I'd say it was about a week until it was fully effective. Its a good drug for me, non addictive with no particular side effects. I've had sleep problems all my life (autism) and before we tried this I'd just suffer the sleep deprivation for weeks and weeks until doctors would finally give a few diazepam to knock me out (and it takes a HELL of a lot diazepam to do that). So this is a much better solution.
