Stress, anxiety and voices... Help!

I'm currently seeing a psychiatrist for this but just wondering if anyone experienced hearing muffled voices or weird sounds either through a depressive episode or through extreme stress and anxiety. I hope I'm not alone on this. Sad Still looking for reassurance further to an earlier post. Feeling alone with this.

Thank you in advance.

Hello,
I don’t have any personal experience if this although I know people who have and it must be very scary and upsetting for you. I just wanted to say though that I don’t think it’s as unusual as people would think. How often are you hearing them?

bonjour16 · 07/02/2020 09:51

@Gonewiththemadness thank you. Mostly when I'm alone sometimes throughout the day as well as night. I'm terrified of them. Visious circle. Did it settle for the people you know? Was it mostly caused by depression/anxiety?

Anyone else experienced this?

Thanks again.

I’m sorry you’re feeling so distressed by this. The person closest to me who experiences voices is diagnosed with schizophrenia but manages it very well through therapy and medications and leads a very productive life with a good full time job. I know that when she feels stressed and/or anxious or depressed it is harder for her to keep control of though.
What sorts of things are the voices saying?
I have somebody In my life who is currently hearing what is described as voices by them but they say it’s more low level grumbling and angry noises. No idea what could be causing it at the moment.
Are you managing to sleep well at the moment? I ask as a lack of sleep may make it worse.

@Gonewiththemadness thanks for your reply. I can't really make out what the voices are saying. It's like a foreign language/angry yelling. Sometimes I hear my name though which is freaking me out. I've had the low level grumbling too. No idea what this is and if it really is just my depression and anxiety!? Thanks again.

I wish I had some personal experience to share but if I can be someone for you to talk to it might feel a bit easier to deal with.
I can completely understand that hearing your own name must be quite scary. All of it must be but your name must feel more scary.
I think that noises/voices can be pretty common in depression and anxiety and even if it were to be something different causing it there’s nothing to be ashamed of, mental health, physical health, it’s all our health and it all needs a little help sometimes.
I personally tend to get a bit sucked into paranoia when I’m feeling particularly low and/or anxious.
I’ve had it so many times now that I’ve learned to try to reason with myself that I’m being paranoid and the things I’m worrying about aren’t really happening but it doesn’t make it any less scary or upsetting!
What has the physiatrist said his opinion on it is?
I’m glad you’re sleeping well. Waking up isn’t ideal but if you’re getting back to sleep quickly you’re probably still getting a decent sleep. If it’s disturbing you too much waking though it might be worth looking into taking something to help you sleep just temporarily to see if it helps.

@Gonewiththemadness thank you so much for your kind reply. Depression and anxiety really suck Sad I see my psychiatrist again on Tuesday but so far he is firm believer that it is severe depression that's causing this. I ask and ask again but hes not too concerned and thinks that when my depression and anxiety goes, so will the noises/voises. I hope he's right! I don't think he realises how scared I am of them.

Hello @bonjour16 , how are you feeling today? They do. Not everyone experiences it the same either so what’s normal for one person won’t be for another.
I’m sorry you’re having such a tough time with it. When I was seeing my counsellor I was asking him “what is wrong with me?!” Convinced there was something serious but he didn’t think so and now I’m in a better place I’d agree that I was just struggling at the time with depression and anxiety.
I’d never even been able to admit that to myself though until recently as I’ve always put on a brave face and got on with it but since acknowledging it and dealing with it I feel allot better.
How’s your weekend been?

Watching this my dd2 age 15 told me she hears voices similar to what you are hearing. It makes her quite angry and she cries cause it is frightening.
When she gets a hard time at school it gets worse. Looking any help anyone can give she won't go to gp.

@Gonewiththemadness thanks for your reply. Struggled at the weekend and was woken up with the same angry yelling Sad this morning. Seeing my psychiatrist tomorrow. I hope he can help. I wonder if it's the medication causing it. Don't know. Desperate for it to go away x

How are you doing @bonjour16, sorry I missed your last reply. How did things go with the physiatrist?
