hi all
my name is mishi and i am 26 from liverpool. I have been suffering from depression since my son was 3mths old. I dont really refer to it as pnd as it is due to lots of things from years ago. I hate how i feel and constantly struggle to get through the day. I am on medication and currently receive weekly visits from my cpn and hv as well as having counselling. I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks aswell as low thoughts/ feelings.. Suppose thats enough info for now...lol
sorry to go on
nice to meet u all
mishi

Hi mishi. Sorry to hear that you are having a hard time since having ds. How old is he now? This is so common, and we have all felt that one of the hardest parts of depression is actually to be open about it. So you have already taken a really positive step . Everyone on here is really supportive and you will get some great advice and help, so don't feel afraid to keep posting.

How long have you been taking your medication? If you have been on it for a while, have you been back to see your doctor, because perhaps he needs to adjust the dosage? It is good you are having counselling though, but I think that sometimes you feel worse before you feel better, but keep going - it is a way to kick this. There is also cognitive behaviour therapy which seems to be very helpful in managing depression, and there are lots on here who have experience of this (I'm just a learner!!). Anyway, just wanted you to know that you are not alone in this. Hugs.

I don't really have any advice but just wanted to say welcome to mumsnet, mishi.

hi and thanks to you both. my little boy will be one on 10th oct and i have been on medication since last jan. I have been on a few different meds but am currently on venlaflaxine which was given by the psychatrist. CBT wouldnt work for me mainly due to the reason that i suffer depression..i did actually use to work as a mental health worker which can be a pain as i have too much insight into what is happening..lol..
take care all

Hi Mishi

I had post natal depression too after my first child. I'm sorry to hear you're feeling rough. I'll pass on the best thing that was said to me

IT DOES GET BETTER.

Hold onto that.

The pills and the CPN will help in time so just take every day one at a time. I got through it and you will to. I didn't get it with my second child!

If you want to talk I'm here.

Has anyone else had horrendous side effects when starting Seroxat,Intense Nausea, sweating and feeling so ill needed to spend a few days in bed to recover.I have just had this horrid experiance and wondered if anyone had failed with Seroxat but found another antidepressant that they could tolerate the initial side effects.
Thank you in advance for any encouraging advice

colditzmum · 24/10/2004 23:19

I really Know how that feels mishi! i broke down completly after my boy was born but it really does get better. i think having a baby can cause all sorts of other crap to rear its ugly head, and what happens is not necessarily PND. my boy is 18mths now but if something horrible happens to me in theday i am bound to get a panic attack that night, but it is better than it used to be. it gets better every day. sending an email is a step in the right direction

I also had very bad depression after dd was born although like you it was about more than just having had a child. I have been quite well now for about a year and a half but to this day I still get panic attacks when I feel like the world is caving in on me and mood swings especially around that time of the month - you are certainly not alone. It does get better as I am sure you know from professinla experience I hope you have people who support you.

AS for sertoxat I was on it for a while and suffered from really awful hot flushes and sweating, the first few weeks were awful but it did settle after that. I did have top change though as I also suffer from fatigue which was made worse by the sweating and feeling hot. Of more concern was the fat that it seemed to make my mood even lower and had quite scary mood changes that were unpredictable. However many people use SSRIs including Seroxat with great success so it is worth giving them a chance to work - a few weeks at least

IOdecided with my doctor that SSRIs were not for me and went on to a trcyclic (impipramene) which worked better and I think studies have shown that tricyclic are perhaps more effective in severe depression (which I had) although they are more of a risk to patients deemed a suicide risk which is more likely I suppose if they are severly depressed.

I had a frightening experience on Cipralex, a week ago, panic attacks, racing heart, fear like I have never felt before.Oh and the rage!! I could have killed any one that got in my way with my bare hands, and I wanted to kill myself.Ended up in A and e and doc decided that ssris are definately not for me, some people respond really well to them but others dont thats why there are so many ads on the market, the gp has suggested that a tricyclic might be suitible for me bit havent started any yet.I took Gamanil when I was 18 with no probs.

Hi all,
as teadrinker wrote... it will get better! I fell into PND 5 months after having had dd, as I went back to work and it all got too much. Had a brilliant locum doc though who put me on stuff containing 'paroxetin' I think it could have been Seroxat. As 'Swinton' I did experience side effects to start off with as the body finally was given a chance to switch off and not run purely on adrenaline. After the first 2 weeks though it was brilliant and my 'dark thoughts' subsided. I always felt with the first bout of AND that admitting that one has a problem and seeking help is the most important bit. I did feel silly when I went to see my doc to say that I don't seem to be able to cope with one child, when there are so many mums out there coping with 2 or more... or seemingly coping as my doctor put it...
Just had ds 7 weeks ago and am unfortunately drifting towards low and desperate yet again, especially when both kids are sreaming/crying and I feel completely helpless and alone in this world, even though dh does take them off me in the evening so I get some rest. So probably will have to go back on the paroxetin, but hey... at least I have experienced that it will get better at least once the kids are a bit more independent! Also helps that I'm 'dumping' dd at the childminder for 2 full days a week. Can highly recommend that if you can afford it!

MrsBigD · 26/10/2004 11:11

P.S. dd is 3 in december, so had a good year of feeling great - besides wishing for 8h continous sleep that is
