SSRIs vs Snris

If you couldn't tolerate SSRIs did snris work for you? I've tried 2 ssris couldn't take the side effects so now I've been prescribed snri trazodone. I'm scared to take it as I'm sure taking all these different pills must be messing me up more.

No I was sick as a dog. Ended up on Tricyclic ADs instead which ironically are the ones with all the scaremongering about side effects. Been fine on them.

I found SSRIS didn't work for my depression so now I take Venlafaxine which is an SNRI & find it very effective despite the side effects.

I would say it's saved my life.

It's just a minefield trying to find what's best for each individual.
@nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut what tricyclic are you on? I can't face the thought of weeks of hell side effects it's hard when looking after 3 young DC. Just wish I could find my own magic pill!

@LilyJade what are the side effects on that medication?

I have taken venlafaxine in the past but had to switch due to pregnancy. It worked absolutely brilliantly for me but the withdrawals effects of even just missing one dose are absolutely awful.

I can’t get on with SSRIs. I found a tricyclic better once the side effects (mainly dizziness on standing) settled down. DH is on an SNRI but it’s messed with his sleeping pattern.

I'm on 337.5mg of venlafaxine Modified release.

I get very tired but that could be caused by my other meds too.

The main side effects that have affected me are that it has weakened the muscles in my bladder so I need to take medication to stay continent which actually works well.
Also weakens the muscles in my eyes so I need to wear glasses with a prism in the lens.
I need a yearly ecg too.

But it's all worth it as I had crippling depression, could only see a bleak future ahead of me & now I feel so much more positive. I can actually function.
I still get low but only for a few hours at a time & I can then feel the venlafaxine lifting my mood.
I rarely feel suicidal now whereas it was all I could think about in the past.

SSRIs made me feel like a zombie. Venlafaxine saved my life. Literally

Amitriptyline. Leaflet reads like a horror novel but actually all I got was a few spells of mild dizziness, think head rush when standing up kind of thing. Happened maybe two or three times over the first fortnight then nothing and dry mouth. The dry mouth persisted but if that's the trade off for good sleep and not feeling suicidal then I'll take it. I just carry sucky sweets and keep a bottle of water in the car.

Thanks everyone. I know it's just trial and error to see which one will suit. I suffer from fatigue so I'm worried the one I've been prescribed is a sedative to help sleep. I need something to give me energy not zap it.
