Hi iv just prescribed 10mg of these citalopram and I'm wondering what people's side effects were like , I'm terrified to start them as iv had antidepressants before and gave up after the first day due to side effects, really need to stick these as I really really need to get better
Thank you x

Thanks everyone, DS is 22. He lives at home . Hes so up and down, today has been particularly bad, very withdrawn.
It breaks my heart to see him like this.

@franticpleasehelp
Sorry I haven't started them yet I'm still terrified , I know I sound soft but I'm so scared of feeling worse than I already do xxx

You are not soft atall, I know nothing about Antidepressants and I'd be scared too.
I really think my DS needs them but even tho, I'm still frightened about what they will do to him.
Although saying that, I've read some reassuring stories on here in the last few days. It would appear they are worth it in the long run, it's just the initial acceptance.
Flowers thanks for replying, I do hope things improve for you.

No side effects except epic dreams and great sleep. It took about 3 months for them to kick in and it was truly wonderful. Wish I had done it years ago.

Sympathy to you and to Frantic’s family.

The ADs don’t solve things but they can enable you to start to get on top of the depression in your own way.

In DS’s case, he massively neglected himself when very depressed - not eating or sleeping or getting outside or talking to people - which is enough to make anyone feel terrible. Taking the AD regularly interrupts the spiral.

All these posts do sound promising for the lack of side effects , iv just had bad experiences on other antidepressants with side effects so it's completely freightened the life out of me , il get the courage soon I'm sure , thanks so much everyone I really appreciate all your replies , @franticpleasehelp I really hope your son gets better , as a mother to two sons myself I can imagine your worry must be awful xxxxxxx

@cdjh thankyouFlowers
I hope you find the courage to give them a try, please let us know how it goes if you do.

Something that helped DS start or switch medications is to say out loud (or write down), 'This [thought/weird feeling/symptom] is just the new pills, so it'll go away in a few days.'

FranticPleaseHelp · 20/01/2020 14:40

Good advice, thankyou x

I've been taking them for about a year now and they do help. Side effects I experienced at first were:

Dry mouth in the morning
Headaches
Insomnia
Jaw clenching / teeth grinding (this was a weird one!)
Twitch in my left eyelid
Loss of libido

However after about 6 weeks it all settled down and they do help, I am glad I'm on them now. The side effects are annoying but it wasn't anything I couldn't live with and I was off work at the time anyway so it was OK for me.

I'd say it's worth giving them a go and if you do get bad side effects just go back to the GP and try something else or try a smaller dose. I was sceptical about medication but glad I tried it.

Good luck x
