50mg sertraline and all the scary side effects!

I started taking 50mg of sertraline 2 days ago due to anxiety. After reading through several threads & other blogs there are ALOT of negative posts and reviews! Does anyone have any positive stories whilst taking sertraline, I feel like I’m driving myself crazy worrying when these awful side effects will kick in.

Hello, I’m currently taking this and have been for a year. I had no side effects except maybe slightly increased appetite (I now eat breakfast!) but otherwise been fine. It’s really made me feel much better and I hope does the same for you. Flowers

Helped me so much. Felt exhausted and anxious for a few days and then it was life changing.

Thank you both so much! That helps a lot! It’s so good to read positive reviews about it! I understand everyone will react differently! Thank you x Smile

DS felt terrible for a week but now is feeling much better. Gets a few hot flushes.

Han211993 · 05/01/2020 17:27

I’m glad it helped you and you only suffered those side effects for a few days!

I am on it for half the year (SAD) and the only side effects I get are about a week soon after I start taking it where it's a bit difficult to sleep. But that passes quickly and other than that it's great!

Raffles1981 · 05/01/2020 17:30

This is my third time on Sertraline, 50mg. The nausea is not as bad as the last time I took it. It's been a great thing for me. Once the side effects settle, you will too. I honestly feel a lot better for it. Calmer, quieter. Stick with it OP, the side effects are only for a week or two Flowers

Sertraline was life changing for me last year when I went through a period of depression. Helped me to think rationally and stopped all self harm thoughts. I didn't have any awful side effects apart from weight gain but a different story when I came off it.

Hi, I've been on the same dosage for about 4 months. Also for anxiety.
For me the negative side effects were short lived and the positives far out weigh them.
For the first 3/4 weeks I had, trouble sleeping yet felt exhausted, like bone crushingly tired. Also felt VERY tearful for the first 2 weeks.
For me, switching to taking the medication first thing as opposed to evenings helped slightly and everything settled naturally by about week 4.
The benefits of taking it have been amazing, wish I had sought help long before I did.
I no longer feel overwhelmed and anxious about everything, the daily sick feeling and 'anxious knot' in my stomach has gone, I'm calmer, I can concentrate much better now that my mind isn't in overdrive, I feel generally happier and life is just much more manageable.
Feel free to ask any questions and good luck, I hope they begin to have the same positive effect for you. Don't be disheartened though if initially you don't feel great or indeed worse. It will pass.

The main side effect I experienced was vivid dreams. They weren’t unpleasant, it was like watching a movie every night. Quite odd😊.

Also dry mouth.

Nothing too dreadful.

Han211993 · 05/01/2020 17:32

Thank you all so much

I've been on it for 2 months and was terrified of taking it because of all the side effects and horror stories online. I felt ever so slightly queasy for a couple of days (no more than a "oops too many wines on a night out" queasy). Now I have no side effects but am feeling mentally better each day. I bloody love this drug.

KatzP · 05/01/2020 17:36

I had some side effects at the start. But the settled very quickly and I’ve been on it for 2 years now.

lineandsinker · 05/01/2020 17:39

I’ve been on 100mg of Sertraline since Oct for post-natal anxiety. Like you, I was apprehensive of taking it due to the horror stories online but I didn’t have any side effects bar a dry mouth in the morning for a few weeks.

If you’re worried, you could always cut the tablet in half and start with 25mg for a few days to ease you in. This was what my GP suggested when I told her of my worries but in the end, I took the plunge into the full dose and was pleasantly surprised. It’s a wonder drug.

icecreamsundae32 · 05/01/2020 17:40

I had bad heartburn at night on days 3-8 taking it, despite taking it in the morning. But no other side effects and it started to help really quickly.

icecreamsundae32 · 05/01/2020 17:40

Oh and I took 25mg for first week then 50mg

BeardedVulture · 05/01/2020 17:42

I’ve been on it for 4 years and it has been a huge help. I had trouble sleeping and felt weird and shaky for the first few days, but after that, no side effects.

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 05/01/2020 17:44

20 years on 200mg, some side effects which am just used to now.

Han211993 · 05/01/2020 17:48

Can’t thank you all enough, really put my mind at ease!!

I take that dose and have also had periods of 100mg.

I had a few side effects of the runs and dry mouth. But they don't last long and the benefits are well worth it.

It has improved my life no end.

pigdogridesagain · 05/01/2020 18:17

I've been on 200mg for over a year and I have had no side effects whatsoever.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 05/01/2020 19:25

Sertraline is one if the most widely tolerated ADs around. Very few people will have any serious side effects. They have to list any that have been even rarely reported or are remotely plausible, just to cover themselves but the chances of you being in that minority who suffers are minute.

For perspective, I take Amitriptyline which isnt generally prescribed for depression anymore except as a last resort because of the side effects.

It has quite the reputation apparently and the side effects go onto the second side if the leaflet. I take a fairly high dose which had to be authorised by a consultant psychiatrist. I have dry mouth and some mild dizziness if I fuckarse around with the dose. That's it. Out of that double sided leaflet of dire warnings, I got 2.

People are always quick to complain but for everyone who does there are probably 5 more who are fine.
