Citalopram

After previously cancelling 4 appointments I finally found the courage to see my GP yesterday and have been prescribed Citalopram for anxiety.

I've never had this before (never had any kind of anti-depressant before) so I was wondering seeing if anyone can tell me what to expect? I'm worried about side effects and if I'm going to feel worse before feeling better especially with Christmas coming (I don't want to ruin it for everyone by feeling awful). Is there a better time to take it?

I'm really nervous and feeling worse than ever today but I think it's because I'm anxious over starting the medication as well as all the other reasons I'm feeling anxious.

Thanks x

Hello!
I've just been put in this too for the same reason. I've been on and off it over the years and my symptoms are always the same:

  1. First few days I feel quite nauseous and spaced out. Find it hard to concentrate. I usually start on a Friday night so I don't feel this way for long at work.

  2. About a week in they start to take proper effect. Basically, I can feel my anxiety starting and my stomach begin to churn with nerves but then it suddenly stops. Almost like I have a lower limit. Even when I try to think about what it was I can't feel properly anxious. As time goes on it settles on an even keel.

Well done for taking the first steps, honestly it is wonderful to be free of crippling anxiety Thanks

I hope I don’t sound like a repeating record because I’ve shared this on other threads, but for me it was a life saver. No side effects just benefits. A few problems coming off, but the benefits way, way outweighed those.

It saved my life.

Start it right away and you should be over the side effects by Christmas. First week I was constantly yawning and felt no different mentally. Second week felt better mentally but kept going a bit light headed. 3rd week I was a different woman.

Hi! Thank you both so much for replying I actually feel a bit better now.

I'm going to take the first one tonight and hope that I'm ok!

I don't work at the moment (I'm not lazy I just gave up a job I didn't like in July and I need to find something that fits around the kids as I don't have family around except my husband). So if I feel a bit foggy tomorrow then I can just get through it.

I'm really hoping that these work for me like they have worked for both of you, I really need them to!

Sorry bunny I cross posted with you, I'm so glad they helped you so much. I'm definitely starting them tonight now.

Well done Wilber, the tablets are wonderful for helping you to take back control! If they don't work they can up the dosage and try other things so don't give up. Always go back to the doctor!

I suffered from a few days of nausea after starting on citalopram. I found that taking them in the evening was best for me as it meant that I didn't feel sick for too long during the day.
I don't feel spaced out taking them. Everything just feels a bit flatter, my temper doesn't flare up so quickly, which is a good thing!
