Anti depressant hunger and subsequent weight gain

I am so hungry all the time on depressants it's just ridiculous.
Take this morning, I've had two pieces of wholemeal toast with butter and marmite and a coffee this morning at about 6:50am, it's now 10am and I am absolutely starving. Im seriously thinking about eating my lunch and then I'll have to buy a new lunch for actual lunch time when I'll be hungry again. Is anyone else like this? I'm ravenous basically all the time.

Thanks @MarysinTheDyson. Sounds like bupropion is the only one and that's not registered as an AD in UK, only as an anti-smoking med.

MarysInTheDyson · 21/11/2019 14:04

I think it was this article www.verywellmind.com/antidepressant-and-weight-1067613

MarysInTheDyson · 21/11/2019 14:07

Not sure. I remember it as a wikipedia article. I googled "anti depressants that help with weight loss" to find it

MarysInTheDyson · 21/11/2019 14:11

It was about 6 months ago i googled but decided against changing due to the sleep thing

dontalltalkatonce · 21/11/2019 16:29

You can't change, anyhow, because it's only licensed as a smoking cessation med in the UK.

newdeer · 21/11/2019 16:31

Yes, it's an AD in USA but here it's just for stopping smoking. A friend tried it and had appalling side effects on it so came off immediately.

dontalltalkatonce · 21/11/2019 16:34

It can be used with other drugs like mirtazapine to counteract the weight gain but still get the effects of the other drug but no go in the UK, they really don't care if you pile on weight but then go on about the obesity crisis. I honestly don't bother with doctors anymore.

I’ve gained a lot of weight since on anti depressants. It makes me miserable and I do not like myself. But if I come off anti depressants then I’m depressed so... 🤷🏼‍♀️

Queenoftheashes · 21/11/2019 16:46

This happened to me on citlopram. I changed to sertraline. Other stuff happened that made me gain more weight when I came off them but the citalopram definitely ruined the gym/healthy eating drive I’d had until then!

MarysInTheDyson · 21/11/2019 17:12

dontalltalkatonce it says prozac as well in the article i posted at 14.04 but i think that isn't good for sleep

MarysInTheDyson · 21/11/2019 17:15

Fluoxetine in this one too. Unfortunately I'm on Amytriptiline which it says is one of the worst offenders, but does help with sleep

I’ve been on them all at one time or another. They all made me gain weight. However some are wise than others. Here’s my rank order with worst at the top.

Paroxetine
Chlomipramine
Citalopram
Fluoxetine/Sertraline
Amitryptiline
Mirtazapine (l didn’t find it too bad)
Trazadone

Paroxetine just turned me into a crazy eating machine. Non stop even though my stomach hurt from being stuffed full all the time

My go told me lofepramine is the ont they prescribe if people don’t want to put on weight. I’m allergic to that one

cherryblossomgin · 21/11/2019 17:23

I buy frozen fruit to snack on because I am always hungry on Citalopram. It seems to help and if you blend it with a little milk and honey it's like icecream.

My son is on fluoxetine for OCD but he is also only 11 (he has HFA and ADHD, the latter of which he is also medicated for) but hasn't experienced negative side effects (of course, all the drugs were also tested on only males and he is also already starting puberty). For me I am female, 5ft, 4in. with a stocky build and also did gymnastics a lot as a child, so when told 'Here, take mirtazapine, go away!' it was like nope. I'm 48 and perimenopausal (still regular periods but VERY short and hot flushes and sweats) and already pre-disposed to putting on weight in my middle, so I just chunter along, knowing I have PTSD and depression (it was actually an A&E doc who squealed to my GP), going for as many long walks as I can manage to keep my weight in check (I'm too heavy as it is).
