Hobby needed

I am 7 weeks pregnant. I need a hobby. I don't feel particularly happy a lot of the time when I'm at home just milling around. We've always had houses that require DIY and are just in the process of buying another one. I know I will be limited as to what I can do as I become more pregnant / have a small child. DH is quite happy just getting on with his own thing (DIY or playing in his garage related).

But I feel that I need a new hobby to get me a little happier / have something to do. In the new house we will be surrounded by nice countryside so plan on lots of walks. But am also wanting something to do that's "my thing".

Hit me with ideas!

I occasionally go to the gym... actually going this afternoon to see if that makes me feel a bit better.

Crochet. I find it very relaxing and it’s nice to finish a project.

Working with clay, needle felting, embroidery, sewing, quilting, woodwork, painting etc.

Have a google or YouTube and see I find there’s anything you’d like to try.

See if you find* (iPad autocorrect isn’t behaving today).

I do cross stitch. There are lots of friendly groups on FB for stitchers too. Crazy About Cross Stitch is one, and they'll welcome you whatever your skill level.

fairyqueen · 03/11/2019 13:35

Cross stitch can be portable which is sometimes useful. Crochet or knitting are too and they produce useful things. I’m obsessed with quilting. But really it’s your boat that needs to get floated so give us some clues!

Bird watching?

iklboo · 03/11/2019 13:37

Agree with crochet & cross stitch. Relaxing and rewarding.

lazylinguist · 03/11/2019 13:37

Knitting. I loooove knitting, and there are also so many gorgeous Instagram pages to follow, with beautiful yarns and things to make. Knitting has come a long way in chicness since my granny's day!

Painting/sketching

Absa · 03/11/2019 13:47

Maybe the cross stitch / knitting idea would be something to try but I find it hard with new things like that as to where to start and having to buy everything! Also, what on Earth do you do with stuff once you've finished something?

Sewing and crafting. You could make things for the house and baby.
As new home is in the country studying nature you can combine that with photography or painting and maybe some foraging that would lead into cooking and making things like preserves using the natural products then you could look into making other eco friendly products like soaps. If you do all this you could then make a blog about it.

Fakeflowersaremynewnormal · 03/11/2019 13:49

Ps I don't do any of that as my main hobby is MNing and eating biscuits but you did ask for ideas!

PurpleFrames · 03/11/2019 13:55

I started knitting when I went off sick with MH. I also do adult colouring books which are much more fun than they sound!

Nousernameforme · 03/11/2019 15:46

How about walking? More of an activity than a hobby really. Just get yourself some comfy shoes and an audio book/podcast on your phone to listen to and you are off. Its gentle exercise gets you out of the house and you can go as far as you like. It's easy to keep up when baby is here too.

Nousernameforme · 03/11/2019 15:46

Sorry see what you about walking but no reason you can't go alone as well.

Diy2019 · 04/11/2019 12:31

I've started cross stitch recently which I'm finding really relaxing and rewarding. My first pattern is being made into a cushion, it all came in a set together. Next I'm going to make pics for my ds room, he has a space theme going on so a couple of planets that can be hung on the wall as pictures

Alexithym · 04/11/2019 16:47

Studying! There are loads of MOOCs now! You can learn loads of things!

"Also, what on Earth do you do with stuff once you've finished something?"

Well, with crochet (my crafty hobby of choice) - you wear the things you make :)

I made baby clothes, hats, booties, blankets etc for DS
Made DH a blanket,, made table mats for the dining table..
Have made scavres, gloves, jumpers, blankets, slippers etc for others

00100001 · 04/11/2019 16:52

and also with crochet/knitting

all you need to start is a ball of yarn and a hook/pair of needles - you can start for less than a fiver.

Then use youtube tutorials :)

Spudlet · 04/11/2019 16:55

I knit, mostly things for DS so they have a use! I’ve made him a Hey Duggee hat, several pairs of fingerless mittens, a Hey Duggee toy which he takes to bed and a jumper which he will not wear (😑). Plus plenty of things for myself - scarves and gloves, plus a bag for my yoga mat. And some Christmas decorations! There are loads of useful things you can make 😊

ImPermanentlyConfused · 04/11/2019 17:00

I do resin crafting. Lots of fun, ways to experiment and I make the successful pieces into jewellery, otherwise I keep them for my daughter to play with since she loves them so much pol

lazylinguist · 05/11/2019 14:52

You really don't need to buy much to start knitting. One pair of knitting needles and a ball of wool and you can make a scarf.

Start by making simple things for yourself and for your house (cushion cover, tea cosy, simple bag etc) then when you've progressed you can make stuff for other people. I started in my late 30s as a total beginner and can now knit jumpers, socks etc (socks are my favourite things to knit!).

lazylinguist · 05/11/2019 14:53

Spudlet - liking the idea of a knitted yoga mat bag!
