Mirtazipine Withdrawal - hell

Has anyone else been through this? I'm day 7 without and getting horrendous flu like symptoms. Ive started grinding my teeth again so my mouth is in agony too.

I was taken off to be put on propranolol and fluoxetine which I feel is helping my anxious symptoms.

Anyone know how long I'm expected to feel like this? I was on it for 4 years.

Did you taper or just stop cold turkey? After four years that would be a very bad idea.
What dosage were you on?

I was on 15mg and just stopped cold. I did query with the doctor about cutting down while starting the fluoxetine but he said a straight swap should be fine! Since then I've read horrific stories about it online but not sure how true they are.

I was on it for just over a year and on 15mg, didn't swap and only tapered for a few weeks as the tiredness was affected me too much and the joint pain.

It took me about 3 months to feel better but the tiredness and aching joints eased pretty much straight away which was nice!

The withdrawal hell stories online are probably mostly true - it's not going to affect everyone that way but it's a risk if you stop too quickly, ditto for SSRIs. The most up to date advice for any of these things is a slow taper but a lot of doctors don't seem to be that clued up.

I'm not personally sure how a taper would work if you're going on to another medication as in your case.

Is it possible that some of the symptoms are being caused by the fluoxetine? Most SSRIs can be quite activating at the start.

Hi I'm just wondering how you are doing with the withdrawals ? I am trying to wean off from 7.5mg (a tiny dose) but every time I drop my dose I am getting a panicky feeling in my chest, vomiting and sweating but feeling cold. To the point I end up just retaking the mirtazipine because I can't cope with feeling so awful.

TheCatsMeow40 · 12/12/2019 13:34

My doctor told me she tells people to drop to 15mg then stop and they're fine, she doesn't even think my weight gain is the mirtazapine and has no idea what to try me on next, I know more than her about medication to the point she asks me what I want to try next, doctors don't seem to know much about medications, scary really when they can prescribe the pills they know nothing about

I went cold turkey from 30mg. Only withdrawal symptom was disturbed sleep for a week. But I haven't been in it too long.

I went cold turkey from 30mg for two years and was absolutely fine.

There are definitely people who aren’t as lucky, but stopping doesn’t always have to mean awful symptoms for people.

Good luck, and hope you feel better soon.
