MAOI’s?

My psychiatrist wants me to switch to an MAOI anti depressant as I’m out of other options. My mood has remained very low. She’s explained the massive food and drink restrictions, which seems like a complete pain.
Does anyone have any experience please?

I’m very hesitant to change to them, I know they’re pretty heavy duty anti-depressants and I’m not sure the risk warrants any gain.
I’m aware I’m not in a good place and I’m scared of dropping further. Plus I don’t drink much these days but I do like the very occasional drink and I know I can’t at all on these.

I was on Aurorix MAO many years ago. It was an activating antidepressant. I wasn't told anything about food drink restrictions and I did binge drink sometimes. It didn't really help my other symptoms so went to try something else.

Can I ask what else you have tried? Have you been offered newer medications like agomelatine and bupropion?

For me, the older style meds just dampened me down that much that I didn't care about anything, and you can't be depressed (or anything else!) if you're that flat. There will be people with much better experiences, but I wouldn't try them again.

Banskuwanski, really? I was told you have to watch intake of foods containing tyamine (cheese, marmite and pickles come to mind).
Mrsmaiselsmuff, no I haven’t tried those but I’ll look them up now, thanks. I’ve tried loads of different SSRIs (prosac, lustral, citalapram, escitalapram and others I can’t remember), a fair about of tricyclics (trazadone, imipramine and amitriptaline) and others (venlafaxine and mirtazapine).

Have you had any antidepressant combinations? There is evidence that combining antidepressants -for eg venlafaxine and mirtazepine together will help in treatment resistant depression.
MAOIs are usually fine as long as you are careful , and do sometimes work when nothing else has .
Hope you feel better soon

Thank you, I’m getting really fed up of feeling so horrid. I need this to end.
No I haven’t, I’m surprised they haven’t suggested that first. I do take other tablets for health stuff so that might be a factor. I’m definitely going to ask. Thank you, I really don’t want to any MAOIs if I can help it. I thought I was out of other options, perhaps not after all.

I've seen algomelatine work very well with people who haven't had much luck with other anti depressants. It's defo worth cutting out a few things for 👍

Missblobby · 24/09/2019 16:50

You’re right, if it’s going to work I’d happily cut out even cheese!
I’ve had a couple of very dark days so I’m very ready to try.
Thank you.
