Morning depression

StealthBoaster · 06/09/2019 11:26

I have suffered from depression off and on for a while. I spent some time on anti depressants last year but came off them hoping to manage things with exercise, diet and that sort of thing.

I should mention that I am peri-menopausal.

I am finding mornings unbearable. I do breakfast and school run in near tears every day. I'm usually fine by lunchtime but I need to get this under control. Any advice gratefully received.

Anyone?

No real advice, but I also feel dreadful in the morning. My DH thiks it is just because I am grumpy, but I genuinely feel like my life is sooo awful at that point. I hate getting up (or rather, having to get up). But, like you, once I am up and have had a shower and some coffee, it feels silly. I also suffered depression years ago, and, again like you, have managed to come off the tablets. I am fine most of the time, but it's not too much of an exaggeration to say that most mornings I feel life isn't worth living, which feels very overdramatic a few hours later, when I am fine!

Not sure what the answer is though!

Thanks for responding. For me, it continues after shower, coffee, etc. I try to go for a run or dog walk straight after the school run but since starting back this term, I been doing these in tears and I won't be able to wear sunglasses much longer.

Today hasn't really shifted at all. Still feeling like a weight is hanging over me. I might just be tired I guess.

Mornings are my bad time too. I've started doing beginners Thai chi at home. It's only fifteen minutes and after a couple of weeks I've noticed a change.

Have you tried HRT OP?

Aquamarine1029 · 06/09/2019 21:08

HRT is a lifesaver. There's no reason to be miserable like this.

Just wanted to say that waking up, and mornings themselves used to feel horrendous to me too...and the feeling wouldn't go away til around midday. (Am on SSRIs now but am scared of coming off them).

StealthBoaster · 06/09/2019 22:39

That's a really helpful link Aquamarine - thank you.

HRT scares me but I need to read up on it I guess. I came off ADs when I realised that I was just numbed. I know HRT has had a bad press recently, which worries me.

Apparently I don't even have the enthusiasm to write this post.

Totally agree with Aquamarine I felt like this and chose to ask for HRT rather than antidepressants
It will change your life

MustardScreams · 07/09/2019 07:46

You could also try 5-htp before bed. It works absolute wonders for me, to the point I’ve stopped taking antidepressants. You can buy it in Holland & Barrett

Cittadina · 07/09/2019 07:55

Hi. I am also finding mornings horrendous.

Cittadina · 07/09/2019 07:56

Reading this thread with great interest. I wake up early but just don't seem to be able to get going. When I need to get up early or go somewhere for work I feel so much better.

StealthBoaster · 07/09/2019 15:02

I thought that if I got up and got busy I would bypass it but it seems determined to hang around regardless. Not helped this morning by a row with my mother. I just feel very heavy!

Yes, I've had this a bit. Cortisol levels are highest first thing, it's one of the things I try to remind myself of. Usually find it easiest to just get up and get on with things. Meditation helps.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 07/09/2019 22:30

Apparently HRT is not an option as my periods are still regular. Am going on throdoxine (sp?) instead.

Nope it's actually Prozac... Sold to me as being good for hormonal stuff. Any thoughts? Not loving the idea to be honest.
