Hi just wondering if there is anyone else taking Mirtazapine and how you find it

I did for 8 weeks. It really helped me sleep and feel better but I gained a lot of weight so changed to citalopram. I needed it at that time though as I was on a mental health ward.

I'm bipolar and found it amazing when I took it,but then the morning after I'd feel crap from it.

becky1506 · 12/08/2019 20:45

Thank you both
I have gained so much weight it's unreal and making me feel so much worse about myself and in turn more anxiety
I am going to see about changing

I have been on it since Feb and it has been a god send. Thankfully no weight gain

Annafannabanana · 13/08/2019 00:50

I was on it for 5 years, really knocked me for six at first with waking up in the morning as it sedates you. But after a while did help.

softkittywarmkitty28 · 13/08/2019 08:08

I've been on it just under a year with no side effects, no weight gain (I have anorexia and this was my biggest concern)

steakandcakes · 13/08/2019 14:54

See if promethazine is an option, its been a fantastic in replace of it.

becky1506 · 14/08/2019 10:32

Does this do similar but no weight gain?

I've been on mirtazapine for approx 5yrs. Have been on 15,30 and 45mg. Sleep much better - hangover only lasts a few days so you have to persevere through it. Never had appetite change or weight gain. Not noticed anything else . it has lower risk of sexual side effects. I haven't noticed that as am also on venlafaxine which seems to have made me totally asexual...better than being severely depressed though.
I would give mirtazapine a good go, as it really reduces my anxiety.

dairymilkmonster · 14/08/2019 21:08

p.s. promethazine is not an antidepressant...it is used for allergy, sedation, nausea, motion sickness.
Good for sleep but won't necessarily help mood.

Dh takes it. He has put on tons of weight - it doesn’t bother me but it bothers him. However he is the best he’s been mentally for ages so it’s worth it to him to stay on it (he has bipolar).

Cherrycee · 14/08/2019 21:10

I only started on it recently, almost two weeks in now and it's helping a bit. I was a zombie the first couple of days. No major increase in appetite and no weight gain so far, though it's still early.

In your situation I would go back to the GP and ask to try something else. Good luck with it.

steakandcakes · 16/08/2019 00:55

I have promethazine for when I'm really struggling with a low during my manic depressive stage,it just takes the edge off.

becky1506 · 24/08/2019 18:59

Thank you all for your replies
I am in the process of coming off mirtazapine and moving to duloxetin as the weight gain is having such a negative affect on me. I am more on the anxiety side but have found I'm so low and obsessive over my weight followed with guilt when I ate, but I'm not enjoying the decrees in my meds' I have to come off before starting deloxetin

I've been on it for 18 months, started on 15mg, am on 30mg at the moment, no side effects, hasn't improved my sleep so am using Phenergan as well to get some sleep.

becky1506 · 25/08/2019 08:48

This is one thing I'm worried about as it does help me sleep I'm just hoping that I can sleep once I'm off them
