Mirena

I'm 46. Not menopausal yet.
I have severe and chronic depression and anxiety and am on ADs and antipsychotics.
My mother died of ovarian cancer last year and I want to have an oopherectomy and fallopian tubes removed. I realise this would probably mean low dose hrt for a while.
My gynecologist wants to hold this off to post-50 do an ablation and fit a Mirena (I also have terrible period pains, ovulation pains and PMS)
My question is, has anyone with existing mental illness had a Mirena fitted and how did it effect you?
My mother did not have the BRAca gene but I know my risk of ovarian cancer is still raised after losing close relative to the disease.
I do NOT want to go the same way after what she went through.
And after severe episodes of mental illness with suicidal ideation I am concerned about a hormonal coil.
If you're an existing mental illness patient who have a Mirena, what do you think of it?

I would NOT have a Mirena with your history and tbh, I wouldn't believe the guff they'll tell you that the hormones 'stay in the uterus'. The Mirena suppresses ovulation, and the only way that happens is with the pituitary gland, in the brain, receiving message to stop the hormones that cause ovulation, so well, hormone get to the brain. You can read the leaflet that accompanies Mirena online but I'd be saying no way to this if you have history of psychiatric illness and suicidal ideation. The other thing HCPs like to do, if the Mirena starts causing problems, is tell you to keep it in to 'let it settle' even if you are telling them that your mental health has crashed and you are now ill/ideasing suicide or gone past that and are now making plans/don't feel well.

Yes! This!!
Thankyou. You just confirmed everything I've been concerned about.
I've had two GPS and the gynecologist really pushing me hard on this issue and haven't felt "hears" because in all honesty I don't think they have the specific knowledge to make an informed decision in my particularly case.
Thankyou cosentyx

The Mirena is hard sold to women. You have to tell them NO. Can you take someone with you to appointments? Or talk to your psychiatrist? If you do not it, then do NOT be bamboozled into it because once it's in there, they will be loathe to take it out and quick to fob you off that any deterioration in your mental health is coincidental and simply cannot be a result of the Mirena because 'the hormones stay in the uterus'. It's bullshit. Download the leaflet that comes with the device and read it. It does have side effects in about 15% of users and if you are one who is sensitive to artificial hormones, do not be swayed!!

Depressed mood IS a known side effect. If you already struggle with low mood, I'd give it a miss.

I wouldn't touch the mirena either. I was pushed in to it by gynae consultant even though I said I didn't want one. Lasted 6 to 8 weeks before begging GP to remove it. Why are women being pushed into having these evil things? 😡

Mummaofmytribe · 17/08/2019 20:31

Yes, I have withdrawn permission to on inserted which caused much eye rolling.
I have consented to a hysteroscopy and D n C and we'll go from there.
I know some women swear by the Mirena, which is great, but I couldn't find a single study on its effect on women with a prediagnosed mental illness, and consultant was dismissive, saying "Oh you'll be fine as you're already on psychiatric medication".
Ummm, no, you don't actually know that - so No, Thankyou.
