Psychiatrist doesn't care.

I'm under the care of a psychiatrist for depression and anxiety. I've only seen her a couple of times as my appointments are spaced at least six months apart even though I really need more regular appointments and I really, really struggle in between. The problem is that my assigned psychiatrist just quite clearly does not care. It's like she doesn't even try to hide it. She acts bored in my appointments, she really rushes me, she has no empathy, she doesn't listen, I could go on. After my last appointment I asked the lady at reception if I could request to see a different doctor and I explained my reasons but she said this wasn't possible.

Help.

Can you get some counseling also?

Psychiatrists are diagnosticians really.

Maybe try a therapist?

@Unshriven I understand that but she could at least pretend to care about her patients.

Can you talk to your GP?

It might be that some other support such as a CPN or OT would help you more.

You need a licensed psychologist

If in NHS you can request to be under a different Psychiatry Consultant (I'm assuming she is the Consultant you are under), however you wouldn't just ask the Receptionist as she can only book what the computer system permits. Write to your Consultant via her secretary and ask for a second opinion from a different psychiatrist.

If it is one of the junior doctors you are seeing not the Consultant, then the Receptionist would usually be able to book you in with a different doctor within that team.

Appointments will sadly often be spaced out and short due to NHS pressures.

An NHS psychiatrist is not like a therapist or psychologist though. If you want someone to discuss your feelings and emotions in depth, that would not usually be the NHS psychiatrist. Are you having any therapy or can you access this?

Psychiatrists are usually to make a diagnosis and stabilise medications. Any form of therapeutic talking and listening would be done by someone else. Simply talking to someone has no therapeutic value, whether they care or not.
Maybe ask what your options are around other therapies.
