Quetiapine for BPD any experiences?

mamaandthegirls · 10/07/2019 22:58

I have recently been diagnosed with BPD and have been suggested that I start on Quetiapine alongside my antidepressant to help with my mood. I mostly struggle with depression and the intense rage / anger outbursts from BPD. I have been put on 25mg but yet to start it, wondering if anyone had any experiences on it?
I’m a mum to 2 DD’s so I’m desperate to get better for their sake. Smile

I take it and I like it though the massive side effect that I still struggle with is the sedative one!

@softkittywarmkitty28 thank you for the reply! Do you find it helps your mood at all?

It has worked very well for me. I got used to the drowsiness and that doesn’t affect me any more. Unfortunately has made me put on weight but I’m willing to put up with that for feeling well again.
I take 250mg a day which is a fairly low dose, I take lamotrigine too.

@slipperyeel can I ask what you use it for? And if it’s to help your mood because of MH does it work for you?

The massive drawback of this drug is that it will usually make you exceptionally tired all day long. As a BPD sufferer I tried it and would now advise to steer a wide berth away from Quetiapine.
I hope this helps?

slipperyeel · 17/07/2019 15:12

I use it as a treatment for bipolar disorder - it mainly calms me down, stops intrusive thoughts and stops me getting high.
The lamotrigine helps more with the lows.

I don’t think anyone on the internet can say what will and won’t work, all you can do is take your psychiatrist’s advice and try what they suggest. Quetiapine has worked for me but I also know people who take valporal and people who take lithium.

@Energyman thanks for the reply, I have heard a lot about this drug causing tiredness during the day which I am worried about as I have 2 young children to take care of.

@slipperyeel thank you, glad it helps you in some way. I mostly struggle with the rage side of BPD so I hope it helps me calm down too. And since my second child I get a lot of intrusive thoughts so I’m hoping it helps that too.

There is a slow release version which is supposed to help with the tiredness.
I take the normal stuff as the tiredness wore off for me after a few weeks.

howdyalikemenow · 17/07/2019 15:49

I had it for the same reason but couldn't cope with the tiredness as I'm a single parent of 3 so couldn't afford to be that out of it all day

BluebellsareBlue · 17/07/2019 16:04

I take it for severe ptsd. I take it at night to help me sleep. My only issue is the unbelievable hunger I have and the weight I have put on. Currently looking at trazadone to get rid of the hunger at night and I will take quetiapine during the day as and when required. I currently take 150-200mg a night but it eases and helps my mood. During the day when the change is made I'll take 25mg at a time when required. X

mamaandthegirls · 17/07/2019 16:13

Does anyone know if 25mg will still make me tired? As that’s the dosage I have been asked to try, I’m petrified of being tired during the day because I have to take care of my 2 children while my DP is at work.

I take it for anxiety and PTSD. At night, it helps me switch off and sleep.

But reading this thread, so much has jumped at out at me... I have put on huge amounts of weight, and am always feeling tired and foggy.

Perhaps both are linked to the Quetiapine. I may need to start to wean myself off.

Luckingfovely · 17/07/2019 16:44

Oh and your last question - I generally take 50mg at night, and never feel 100% focused. I get through every day but it's like swimming through mud. Whether that's all because of the Q or not, I don't know. I think I'm going to start weaning off and see if it gets better.

PumpkinPie99 · 17/07/2019 16:47

I used to take it after being diagnosed with BPD, anxiety and depression last year but I had to stop as it was making me incredibly drowsy and I had no energy.
Anytime I took one, 30 mins later I was a sleep and woke up I'd be really drowsy for the next day. I also woke up peeing a couple of times while taking it because it knocked me out so much.

historyrocks · 17/07/2019 16:51

Apparently Quetiapine is at its most sedating at lower doses. I found that the sedation lessened once I got past 300mg and it disappeared entirely once I got past 600mg. I take it for bipolar and it’s the most effective med I take. Really helps with agitated depression and racing thoughts.

Thank you for the replies, it’s very interesting to see everyone’s replies!

Slipperyeel it has been very helpful for my mood with longer periods of stability

mamaandthegirls · 17/07/2019 22:48

That gives me hope @softkittywarmkitty28 as I really want to feel more stable within myself.
