Physical effects of anxiety

Emptyspacex · 20/06/2019 13:28

What physical effects of anxiety do you get?
I keep getting all these symptoms and doctors put it down to anxiety..
Racing heart
Palpitations
Dizziness when standing up
Tinnitus
Blurred vision
Sweaty
Dry mouth
Nervous tummy feeling (the worst at the moment)
The runs
Anxious heavy chest (not chest pain just a heavy feeling)
Brain for
Memory problems

I've had all these for about 8 months after a serious health condition.

I've had ecgs, brain mri, brain CTs, blood pressure monitored, chest xrays, all sorts of blood tests..
The only thing that has come back is low iron.
All different doctors I see whether it's a specialist consultant or just a GP say it's just severe anxiety.
It's driving me mad now.
Enough about me.

Please tell me others also suffer with these physical anxiety symptoms??

Yep 🙋‍♀️ knot in stomach/churning, tingling in arms and legs. It sucks. At the moment I wake up every day like it

Goatrider · 20/06/2019 15:05

Several of those are also symptoms of low iron.

Have you had active B12 measured?

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 20/06/2019 16:58

Yep all of them although the dry mouth is a result of ADs. Have they given you anything to control your symptoms? Perhaps look into propranolol?

Nogodsnomasters · 20/06/2019 17:02

I've had all the symptoms you've listed plus dry mouth, trembling, shortness of breath, dizziness, spacey feeling like I'm floating, muscle aches from being tensed up all the time.

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 20/06/2019 17:15

I could have written this - even down to the major health event and the low iron (now resolved)! I've found CBT and EMDR along with meditation and magnesium (helps with the palpitations) is helping, but still very much not out of the woods yet - I really sympathise Thanks

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 20/06/2019 17:16

Can add regular lump in my throat (globes sensation) and utter exhaustion/tiredness when going through a particularly anxious phase.

Emptyspacex · 20/06/2019 18:40

Thanks for the replies. I am already on propranolol. All that does is take the edge off the racing heart.

Now you mention it @Nogodsnomasters i sometimes get your symptoms aswell.

@CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger sorry to hear you've been through it aswell. Im currently on waiting list for counselling. Really need to ring up again and explain how bad i am atm. There needs to be a support group for people who have had something major happen to them health wise.. I'm sure there probably is.

I had some of these, but taking an antidepressant solves it mostly.

has no one said that to you? Seems a bit poor!

Ellabella989 · 20/06/2019 18:45

Yes I get most of those.
I also get tingling and twitching muscles and I feel like I’m on a boat all the time.
Had every test done you can possibly think of to rule out anything sinister but everything is always normal

gamerchick · 20/06/2019 18:45

What dose propranolol are you on? You'd need at least 80mg to get that lot under control.

Buddyelf · 20/06/2019 18:53

Same! I’m on propranolol now which has significantly reduced my physical symptoms so most of these I don’t get too much of anymore;
Palpitations
Dizziness
Eye wobbles
Brain fog
Headaches
There’s probably more

Emptyspacex · 20/06/2019 19:30

I'm on anti depressants aswell and the depression side of it is completely under control with them it's just the anxiety I cant control.
I'm on 40mg up to 3 times a day I try to just take one a day though as I'm worried they will damage me in the long run. I thought they we're just something you can be on short term.
I also get these weird head pains like little stabby pains in random places on my head.
The more I think about it the more the list goes on.

RosaWaiting · 20/06/2019 19:35

The head pains are anxiety I think, I get those too, exactly as you say, stabby pain.

Maybe up the dose of popwotsit as people say. I thought you could take that for life?

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 20/06/2019 19:56

Ask for the slow release ones, they're called bedranol or something. Come in 80mg and you take one in the morning and one at night.

Emptyspacex · 20/06/2019 20:42

Oh my god I thought I was going insane! So glad you know what i mean with the head pains.
I'd ask for slow release ones but i need that kick in first thing in the morning for the school run.

OP posts:
gamerchick · 20/06/2019 20:44

One isn't enough to control that. Take your full dose so your body gets a proper rest.

I've been on them for years and it's only recently I feel able to go days without one. You dont need to be on them forever.

Sian03 · 20/06/2019 21:04

Oh my God, when you are suffering with anxiety that school run is the hardest!

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 20/06/2019 21:37

You still get that wave of enforced calm, it just lasts longer. If anything, the kick in moment is stronger as they are twice the strength of the ones you currently take.

The head pains are commonly known as brain zaps, you get them when withdrawing too.

What AD do you take? Is there room for it to be increased a little? Perhaps even another added to the mix to get the anxiety under control; I know some do work very well when combined with others.

Emptyspacex · 20/06/2019 22:38

Are they okay to be on for years then? I always thought they were for short term use.
I dont even know why i get so anxious for the school run. As soon as i wake up my hearts pounding.
I'm on mirtazapine 30mg at the moment. I've been prescribed amitriptyline aswell for headaches but i haven't started taking them yet. Aren't they antidepressants aswell?

OP posts:
thesnapandfartisinfallible · 21/06/2019 20:05

They're fine for moderately long term use. I doubt they'd let you stay on them for decades but a few years is fine. I've had them for nearly 2 years and Amitriptyline is the AD I take as well although in a much higher dose than you would for headaches. If you get on well with it, it really is a beast for depression. It's the side effects most people don't like and why it is not often considered. Might be worth looking into.

You'd have to have a yearly ECG but you'll probably do that anyway with long term propranolol use.

SilverNewMoon · 26/06/2019 13:49

Tight chest
Heart palpitations
Nausea
Needing to wee all the time
Diarrhoea
Can't sleep
Headaches
Blurred vision
Shaking

Bluerussian · 26/06/2019 14:13

I've had all those symptoms, except for the tinnitus, because of anxiety and sympathise with you; people often don't realise how anxiety affects people physically, it is so weakening. No medication was of any help and I wouldn't take anything now unless I had pain or an infection.

I do my best to live as peaceful a life as possible to avoid triggers - that's not cowardice, it's self protection. It's easier when you're retired, as I am, but there are still issues that give cause for concern.

You have my sympathy, Emptyspacex. I really hope things will improve for you.

My symptoms are the same feelings I would get if I were about to jump out of a pane or give a speech to thousands of people.

Churning stomach
Tingling hands, feet and limbs
Diarrhoea
Racing, pounding heart
Unable to sleep
Racing thoughts
Catastophising everything
Expecting the worst outcome for whatever it is you are anxious about
Total loss of appetite
Irritability
Impatience

Having suffered from depression and anxiety for most of my adult life, I'd take depression over anxiety ten times out of ten.

I'm suffering from anxiety right now.

BlueMerchant · 10/07/2019 20:53

A medical emergency left me with PTSD. I've had CBT and emdr. I am much better but at the height if it I had
Blurred vision/aura migraine
Palpitations
Shaking
Tingling
Chest pain
Shooting pains in arms
Laryngospasm
(Still suffer occasional migraine and frequent chest pain)

ExtraFox19 · 10/07/2019 21:00

Does anyone else get really bad muscle tension like you feel
Like you need to
be put on some stretching device to get some relief? I think it’s cortisol
That does this?
