What can I take instead of citalopram?

I was on it a few years but stopped in Feb as it wasn't really working, I felt low and I felt so tired all the time. I also felt like if been on for a time. Stopping didn't really make any difference to my mood. However, I've recently got worse I think, in my ability to control my temper. I'll just explode and yell when things get too much. I'm not sure what to do, but think I need to go back onto something. Any recommendations?

I take citalopram. I tried to come off it and felt my mood was difficult to control too. I just felt really irritated and angry. I've gone back on it and feel much better. It's hard to recommend an ssri as everyone is different. But you sound like you need to see your GP.

Definitely time to go back to your GP. Not all SSRIs are the same - some people get on better with setraline, paroxitine...There’s also different kinds of drugs. I tried 3 kinds of SSRIs before agreeing they weren’t for me (they give me nightmares). I’m now on a tricyclic drug, older style but it suits me much better. The one side effect I had (dizzy on standing up) has eased off and I feel much better in myself. Discuss your options with your GP. Some talking therapy might help too.

Thanks building. I felt pretty low on the citalopram and even irritable, but usually managed to stay in control. I'll make an appointment but I'd like to know what to ask for as most GPs seem a bit clueless on ADs.

Like PP I tried 3 different ones until paroxetine. 60mg per day now and it's working so well and has been for about a year.

How do you judge if it's working? Citalopram used to work but seemed to stop in the past year? I've been on and off it for 10 years.

Mind have some good information on medications. But not very experience based, still will at leat help you know what is out there and how it works. There's another website called head meds which I've used before too.
It could be you need an ssri /anti depressant and something for your mood or anxiety which I feel is personally related to irritability. For example propanalol is helpful for me.

They're a bit hit and miss really. I tried 4 SSRIs before trying a tricyclic and getting on much better with it.
