Has anyone had any luck being diagnosed on the NHS as an adult?

I have an appointment next week to see GP next week but I feel they’re just going to laugh at me and tell me I’m lazy and disorganised.

I’m 99% sure I have this and I just want my life to be a bit easier.

Hi op I'm pretty sure that nobody will laugh at you, my doctor certainly didn't. I'm going through the process right now.

I have always suspected I have "something" but after reading a million things on ADD/ADHD it was like a lightbulb moment and my whole life suddenly made sense.

Also, I was at Alder Hey with ds (16) who has Aspergers and it was his yearly review but with a new doctor. Doctor was lovely and was very interested in whether I had a diagnosis of anything which spurred me on to see my own doctor.

He asked me to write down all of the things that made me feel I had ADHD and asked about my childhood etc, I was then referred and had an appointment within a week.

I've been for the appointment where I had to do lots more paperwork and answered questions from the MH nurse who then refers my case to panel and I'm awaiting my appointment to see what the outcome is.

How old are you? I'm 41. Lots of people slip through the net. If diagnosed I will be relieved that I'm not weird/antisocial/insert other insult of choice.

Good luck, am happy to talk if you ever need to.

I went to see my GP after my DS was referred to get a diagnosis, and asked to be referred as well. He ummed and aahhed, and to be honest if I hadn't pushed it, he wouldn't have referred me. However the wait for referral is supposedly 12 months where I am. The referral was over 12 months ago..... It's really frustrating. I'd really see if you can afford private, tbh.

Wow Hypatia where abouts are you? 12 months plus is shocking.

My appointment was early April and i haven't heard a thing since. Someone I know who has been diagnosed in our borough did tell me that the initial appointment was super fast but the diagnosis took a while.
Good luck Flowers

I really hope my experience is like yours then Zoflorabore.

I’m fed up living like this. Forgetting things and running around like a headless chicken all the time five minutes before I need to go somewhere. I’m studying just now and it’s making that so difficult too.

So was it your GP who referred you? Should I take a list with me?

I’m 27 and am definitely thought of as anti social, unorganised and most likely lazy! I’m the eldest of my siblings and am not trusted with anything (probably rightly so) but I want that to change.

Hypatica I really hope you don’t have to wait too much longer. It’s not fair that we should have to go private. Why is this less important than any other diagnosis? Yes it’s not going to kill us but it does make life really difficult at times.

Hi again, yes it was my GP who referred me. I went over something unrelated and at the end of it I just mentioned that I think I have ADHD and he briefly asked me a couple of questions and then said he would book me a double appointment to go through it all and to being a list of things with me that made me think that, starting from childhood if possible.
Once I started writing my bullet points I couldn't stop! Went back for appointment, he photocopied my lists and said he would refer me straight away and that's when I received an appointment for a week later.

This is the waiting part though I assume, waiting for a diagnosis or not.
I've been taken very seriously by every professional I've seen along the way.

I also feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

My husband is 33 and was diagnosed recently. His doctor was amazing through out. We ended up paying privately. But now he is diagnosed he sort of felt worse for a little while. He goes to a support group in our area. Which really helps him, he says he feels normal there as everyone is going through the same process.
Before we went the doctors for the 1st time we both wrote everything down, he also asked me to write things that he does and my list was big 😂 but all the information was good for doctor to write down on your referral. Good luck
