Anyone fancy a Do something new every day thread?

Been discussing how much it helped kick me out of depression to do something - anything - every day that I'd not done before or not since childhood, or something I was scared to do. It made more difference than anything else.
Does anyone fancy having a go at doing something new every day for a week?

I love gatherings of crafters - in my experience they are such welcoming and generous people - generous with their time, their knowledge, their help, their praise.

I was sitting in the corner of the lobby today - taking the weight off my feet and knitting, when a group of ladies came over and claimed the empty seats around me, and within minutes I was seamlessly absorbed into their group. It was lovely.

This thread always make me smile, welcome to the new joiners.

I saw Rocket Man yesterday, it was excellent! I made sauerkraut today and went to my first gym session.

woodcutbirds · 09/06/2019 22:36

That quiche looks gorgeous Jonty I love quiche too. But the calories are shocking.
Wolef that sounds lovely. Makes me wish I was crafty. I can just about darn socks.

New joiner, no ideas of my own to add yet but enjoying reading everyone else’s and hopefully i’ll be able to join in soon

8FencingWire · 09/06/2019 23:23

woodcut, thank you, I did see your post for me on the other thread. Your posts warmed my heart anyway, now even more so ❤️. Thank you.
I saved your cold remedy and will buy the ingredients I don’t have (honey and ginger) on Tuesday. I’m coughing all the time and I feel wooly headed, I can’t quite string stuff together properly. I’m on Lemsip and cough sweets.

My new thing today was trying Lidl’s own brand of Lemsip. Much cheaper!😂. It gave me a couple of windows to get stuff done, like iron DD’s uniform, warm up and eat some food and tidy a bit. But I really struggled the whole day. Tomorrow I go to work, because it would look really bad if I call in sick after a holiday.
Anyway, best I go to bed and pray the cough doesn’t keep me up the whole night.

Hi @AtSea1979 welcome

The idea is we try to do something new every single day - however small - new flavours, new routes to work etc and also add some bigger things - signing up for new classes, going out for new experiences etc. And the other important element is to take a moment to register that you did it - a bit of a pat on the back to yourself or mental thumbs up to yourself for helping get out of a rut or low mood.

Here's some silly mini ones from a list I did ages ago:
Clean your teeth standing on one leg
Clean your teeth or brush your hair with the 'wrong' hand.
Butter toast with the 'wrong' hand.
Get dressed with your eyes closed
Put your key in the lock and open your front door wiht your eyes closed (not recommended on a rainy day with whiny DC around! Grin

I think the idea with stuff like this is just to shake up our brains and get the neurons firing down different pathways. I quite like these ones. Ignore if you think they're weird. Add to them if you like the idea.

Afternoon everyone. Sorry to hear about colds going around fencing. DD was up half the night last night coughing and I can feel my own throat starting to go. Though that might just be tiredness.

That quiche looks amazing, jonty.

Today I have been trying to learn how to roll my r's with only a modicum of success. My dd had a spanish key worker in nursery and can roll them beautifully and I am terribly jealous. I've been watching videos on youtube and also trying out some online spanish lessons just for fun. I love the idea of learning a language but was always terrible at it at school. I'm now mulling over downloading an app and seeing if I can do a bit every day.

Today's New Thing: A friend of mine called up and dragged me off last minute to a class called Body Combat. I LOVED it. Reminded me of being in my twenties when I was super fit and did loads of aerobics and boxing training. I might have (did) looked like a pink faced fat middle aged woman heffering around but I felt really powerful. It was great fun. Going again next week.

Oh I would love to join in if it's not too late! My health anxiety is so bad at atm so this would be a welcome distraction!

It's never too late Flossie. Come on in! Grin

Welcome Flossie! I made time to do a 25 minute yoga routine this morning, and I plan to do another 15 minute one before bed. This mornings routine was one I hadn’t tried before, for the upper back - it was marvellous, stretching out knots all over the place!
Tomorrow I’m going to make butternut squash soup and use up the squash that’s been sat on my counter since Christmas!!

woodcutbirds · 10/06/2019 20:50

I like the idea of specific yoga - never done upper back yoga. I'll google it.

woodcutbirds look on YouTube for Yoga with Adriene. She’s does loads of specific routines - including ones for depression I think, when you’ve got a cold, for grief, for energy, and then all different areas of your body too, it’s great!

lemonbalmtea · 10/06/2019 23:11

Today's new things. Being/getting slightly more organised. Made turkey burgers, the buns were little gem lettuces which was fun. Secret ingredients were dried apricots, oats and carrot. Delicious. Recipe on BBC food if anyone wants it

PowerBadgersUnite · 11/06/2019 18:05

Hey everyone. Today I went to my yoga class again and it was lovely. My new thing was a not exactly new thing. I got a new book out the library that I haven't read before. I find it can be really hard to concentrate on a book when I'm feeling rubbish so I have been slowly reading old favourites recently. Reading a new book I haven't read before feels like quite a big deal at the moment.

woodcutbirds · 11/06/2019 18:50

Badgers I feel the same. Couldn't read for ages when on medication. One of the great joys this year has been getting back into reading after years of not being able to concentrate.

I don't really have one today, unless you count opening the cupboard and discovering DH had bought some Leibniz dark chocolate biscuits with white chocolate covering which I'd never seen before and trying one and then another. [Hmm]

I'm aching from Body Combat though - in places I never knew muscles existed (back of your ribcage?!)

My new thing yesterday was to get rid of all the size 10 clothes I’ve been keeping. I’m a definite 12, 14 on the bottom, have been for at least 3 years. So it’s all gone now.
wood, my DP came home yesterday with a bag full of veggies, but lined on the bottom with Reeses pieces and hazelnut chocolate. I didn’t try them yet though 😂.

ComeAndDance · 12/06/2019 07:43

My new thing yesterday was to go and see a counsellor/psychologist. I had seen a couple before but I can’t say I was that impressed.
But she was amazing. We only did an assessment session but she got everything and made me feel listened rather than having to justify myself all the time. She really got it. Both with the ME and my particular situation at home.
I’m looking forward to see her again next week!

EggAndButter · 12/06/2019 07:46

Sorry for the above name change failure again...
Another new thing for me was to use a lovely cup for my tea that had been put right at the back of a cupboard.
I have bought it about 3 years ago but hardly use it (because of its shape it can’t go with the other cups so it gets forgotten).
I actually really enjoy its shape/design as well as how thin it is.

lemonbalmtea · 12/06/2019 15:06

I love the wonderful things you read on here. Even without trying we can all find a simple new thing each day to remark on.

comeanddance Finding the right therapist makes such a difference. Hope it continues to go well.

I am in a right moody mood (!) today. I had a very productive work day yesterday and it's as if I've gone into rebellion. I was thinking why am I in such a funk and then I thought I'd pop over here as I always feel safe!

Yesterday I went to a Pilates class. Different to my usual Pilates it killed me. I walked a different route home and discovered a new road. I was happily peeking at all the houses then I realised there was no turn off for ages so I had to go back. I laughed at my mistake and walked down the other side of the road so no one thought I was a wierdo I could peek at all the other houses.

A small thing that bought me immense joy was buying a 500ml mug for tea, I drink a lot of herbal tea.

I am struggling with getting to bed early enough to get up early enough. By the time I've been to a class and eaten it's gotten so late. I think I just need to look at what nights I'm going to classes.

Happy hump day everyone.

woodcutbirds · 12/06/2019 15:59

I love all these new cups and mugs appearing on the thread.

Well tonight, I'm doing a big one. Going to an open mic night and signed up to perform. That's it. So scared I feel sick but I want to do some stuff that scares me. I've become way too timid.

Good luck with the therapy, Dance - that's something I've always felt too chicken to do in earnest. Had a couple of vague attempts but never more than half a dozen sessions. The idea of exposing your innermost feelings about your problems to a stranger sends shivers down me. I do think people who do it are phenomenally brave.

PowerBadgersUnite · 12/06/2019 21:35

I'm glad you've found a good therapist that suits you Dance. I've been seeing my current one for almost a year now and she is super. I always think it's a bit like dating and you just have to find someone who you click with for it to work. I hope it continues for you. :)

Good luck with the open mic night Woodcut. That really is brave of you!

Today walked a route I haven't been before and felt quite adventurous in a small sort of way. Grin
