Has anyone else got a phobia of medical professionals?

This sounds very stupid. I know that.

I had a very upsetting experience with a doctor when I was 11 involving him doing an unnecessary (imo) intimate examination. I really struggle with medical interactions since.

I am pretty healthy so luckily this isn't normally an issue but last year I had a high risk pregnancy and had to give birth in hospital.

The pregnancy was pretty hideous in MH terms as the idea of confronting drs in labour was looming all the time. Since then, I cannot shake awful thoughts and dreams involving medical stuff.

Does anyone else have anything like this? If so what did you do? For obvious reason, I don't want to see my GP......!

Not exactly the same, but some similarities. In my very early childhood I had repeated examinations by the elderly and cold handed GP of my labia. To the best of my knowledge there has never been a problem with it and when I have a good look now there are not even the little issues that women worry about. I used to hate this and would scream to avoid it. I got a lot of sore throats too and the same GP spoke to my mother about tonsillectomy. I became so frightened I would run away from home at the mere mention of seeing the doctor.
As an adult I have a real aversion to seeing any sort of doctor. One thing that helps is going private, when I can afford to as I then feel more in control. I had my first son in a private hospital with a female consultant and midwives. DS2 was born at home. I find I'm an argumentative and difficult patient who needs to research everything that might be suggested in a medical situation. I generally end up in tears. Recently there has been a very calm and quietly spoken female GP at my surgery, she is Asian and has an aura of competence and patience about her. I've managed to get through a coil removal and to talk about a couple of other health problems with her, so, OP it might be if you can find an individual who inspires confidence that might help too.

Thanks! Gosh you have so articulated what I feel. I ended up locking myself in a loo during labour to avoid staff and delivered alone.

I am just like that as a patient too. I can see staff rolling their eyes internally as it were but I can't stop the defensive, frightened feelings.
