This treatment is Nice approved
It’s available in 4 nhs trust at the moment for people who don’t get any relief from trying many antidepressants.
It can be used for depression anxiety ptsd and other mh illnesses

It’s very expensive to find yourself at £300 session.

As anyone been offered this by there nhs trust psych?
Or paid privately?

If so did it work for you

I did my undergrad dissertation on TMS. Admittedly not to do with mental health but rather as adding to a research project towards a treatment for Parkinson's.

I've had it done if it helps. I don't remember it hurting, but it does make a noise.

MiniMaxi · 26/04/2019 14:26

Close relative of mine has it for depression. Works wonders.

granadagirl · 26/04/2019 14:56

Thank you
Yes I’ve read it feels like a tapping sound, I think but like mri scam machine makes. Maybe not as noisy

Minimal
Do you know any more information about relative that had it?

Hey keep them coming

Any more info also nhs
Or if privately funded what did you pay and how many sessions

Hi Granada, hmm well I don't know the exact details but to put it simply, pre treatment he is not himself at all, masses of rumination and can't work. After it, he's back to more or less normal (visibly at least) and living life.

He's needed a couple of courses so far. These are privately funded. Thank goodness it looks like people will be able to get it on the nhs soon!

Are you looking into it for yourself or for research purposes?

AwkwardSquad · 26/04/2019 20:51

The Bloggess has been having this treatment - the most recent mention is in the post on April 17th but there was quite a lot about it in previous posts thebloggess.com

I’d never heard of it, but was interested to read about it. She feels it’s helping.

Thank you for replying
It’s for me, i would have to self fund it. It’s very expensive though and they say you may need two sessions, each session I think they said consist of 15.
My nhs trust doesn’t offer it yet, I probably wouldn’t be allowed anyway! Ex psych wouldn’t even see me again 2 yrs ago when I relapsed, told gp to up my meds! even with turning up at a&e 3 times in a bad way she wouldn’t see me after.
Mh is badly in need of funds.

Thank you for the link, haven’t read it yet as I’m having high anxiety day

If this is Nice approved,?im sure it would be much cheaper than dishing years of meds, therapy out

I had it as part of the trial at Nottingham University/ QMC. It gave me awful headaches and had no effect on my mood.

If it's something that needs repeated courses, my query would be how much of the "success" is a placebo effect? It's something that needs a great deal more research before it can be offered on a widespread basis.

granadagirl · 27/04/2019 19:24

Baggypants

Can I ask how many you had?
Was it for anxiety or depression or both as they come hand in hand

I understand about the placebo effect!

Re the repeated, I’m just going of what I was told by one company
Of which I didn’t like the sound of
(I felt they were just after your money, just didn’t get the right vibe with them)
I’ve seen another site where 2 senior psych consultants spend 2 hours going through your mh history, meds, etc

It as been going since 2009 and was Nice approved in 2015

I understand, granadagirl. As and when you feel up to looking at it, there’s a wee video clip of her in the tms headset in the 12th April blog entry. The sound is like an MRI, a fast tapping noise.

NoBaggyPants · 28/04/2019 11:59

It's a few years back but I think I had 16 sessions, four sessions per week for four weeks.

I wouldn't describe the sound as like an MRI, it's not that noisy, more like someone pinging an elastic band against your head. For me, where the pings hit felt like it was too close to my eye - if that makes sense - and I think it's that that caused the headaches.

I have anxiety and depression but I believe the trial was for treating depression.

I've had a little read this morning and it seems so hit and miss, both in success and the way that the treatment is given. Different areas of the brain targeted, different treatment schedules and so on.

NoBaggyPants · 28/04/2019 12:02

They're still recruiting for the Nottingham trial, and there are four centres across the UK. Might be worth contacting them?

It’s a hard and anxiety fuelled decision to make(especially as anxiety is high on most days)
I have to way up
Expense ! Big part. It’s a lot money for a big IF it works for mainly anxiety,
although it’s lead to depression but not first illness
Time, going everyday for 4-6 weeks
I know it’s only 30 mins sessions
The fear of what it’s actually doing to my brain
I’m bad enough taking med!

Think I’ll have to scout around web for 2019 data and statistics

If anyone finds any, please post

Thanks everyone

I had RTMS on the NHS for treatment resistant bipolar depression. It didn’t do an awful lot but wasn’t terribly uncomfortable. I then had a course of theta burst stimulation which was uncomfortable but life changing.

granadagirl · 29/04/2019 16:48

Baggy
Thanks for the link 😀
Sorry it never did it for you, hope your in a better place now

Fruit
Theta burst is tms but stronger and less time given isn’t it?

Don’t know how long ago you had it and where or how many sessions?
Are you still well now?

OP posts:
TheMusicalFruit · 01/05/2019 15:35

I had theta burst daily for four weeks after four weeks of rtms. The treatments only last for about 15 minutes compared to 40 with rtms. It did really pull me out of a depressive hole for which I had been repeatedly hospitalised. Unfortunately I had a psychotic episode two months later. I’m just about back to normal now.
