Anxiety about Mum's Op.

Basically my Mum is having an operation at the end of April and is a high risk patient and could have a stroke or heart attack during the procedure. I'm really worried about it and I have to accompany her to the hospital on the morning of this.
She has asked that I stay with her until she goes down to the theatre. But, I would prefer to drop her off and then visit the next day. Not because I cant be bothered, its because I think I might have a proper panic attack or be sick or something. Shes only got me so no other family or friend could sit with her till she goes in. If I don't do it then I will blame myself if something then happens to her. Its the coping with the constant worry that's really hard as well. Because of the risk she'll be the first one down I'm told but it will still be a couple of hours.I think I'll have to just see how I feel on the day and if I cant manage then I'll have to leave her. What would you do?

I would go and see your GP. They might give you a few diazepam to take (and a few to try out what dose you need/how you react in advance) to quell any anxiety.

Would starting some targetted cbt exercises help? such as thinking about what is theoretical and what are things you can actually do something about? Or using some coping techniques e.g. when you start to feel anxious, name five things you can see, four things you can touch, 3 things you can smell etc.
There are lots online.

I understand the anxiety, well at least I had to take my 10 year old in for an operation, and it was a really horrible anxious thing for me. But I think you need to support your mum and do whatever will make her feel better. Diazepam wouldn’t be any good if you are driving.

Thank You for your replies, the last time I had 2 Valium they gave me a panic attack when I was in A and E for something else. I had to be monitored with a machine that takes your pulse on your finger tip.
I recovered o.k but I've not had one since, I don't think they agree with me.
I'm going to see the G.P next week anyway so I'll discuss it with her.
