Have been taking this since friday. I just feel so awful. Please reassure me that this will kick in at some point. I feel like I will feel like this for ever. I just cant bear it.

Hi I'm on citalopram too, was originally 20mg now down to 10mg, my doc told me they can take 4-6 weeks to really have an effect, and that you can feel worse in the first 4 weeks but its really important to persevere. I felt terrible first 2 weeks then a little better over the next few weeks. Six months on, am feeling much more like my usual laidback self, am enjoying life again. Only problem i have is major increase in appetite!! of the carbohydrate rather than carnal variety, unfortunately.

Just wondering. Is it really essential not to drink alcohol when taking citalopram? Going out next week. Would a couple hurt?

Hi, my doc advised against it. I did have a night out with 3/4 glasses of wine fairly early on in my AD experience and the next day it was like a hangover x 10, felt bloody awful!!! so if you are willing to take the risk, you are a braver girl than me. now I just limit myself to one glass then switch to boring old OJ i'm afraid. And I thought i'd be downing wine by the bucket after abstaining for 9 pregnant months

Does anyone have weight probs while on Citalopram??

hotchocscot · 14/07/2007 00:11

Hi crooks, as i said earlier, i have to fight against my impulse to eat whole loaves of toast on an hourly basis, i really crave carbs. However the benefits of not being a basket case far outweigh a little extra on the hips i think. must go to bed now, i'll check this thread tomorrow.

My doctor told me it was fine to drink in moderation on citalopram. And so I have done; no difference in effect and no hangover.

ktmoomoo · 14/07/2007 15:18

ive been on them for 9 years 20mg my moods are better but i get low days

i am on third week on 10mg of citalopram and hubby says he thinks i am more negative but yesterday i went out and bought a hat and trousers for my new granddaughter who is due in september,i went into mothercare ,without bursting into tears, new baby is coming and we have nothing realy ready, she is not going to replace my grandson, but i have to be her granny now ,i just scared of getting close and losing her ,i never want to feel as bad as i did .sorry

Ulysees · 15/07/2007 19:19

I've taken it for a year or so and think it's great. It doesn't suit everyone though so if you feel no better after a couple of weeks I'd see the doc.

Ulysees · 15/07/2007 19:22

I take mine in the morning and drink on it. Don't get drunk though and drink at night

hazygirl · 15/07/2007 19:28

i take my morning as i work nights ,and i very rarerly drink

prufrock · 15/07/2007 19:34

I was on it for just over a year and it made a huge difference. You can drink - it's more that drinking exacerbates the depression, so not much point in taking tablets to not be anxious/depressed, then drinking which makes you anxious/depressed. But the odd glass of wine is fine, and once you are stabilised on them you can drink away - I did get very drunk a few times during my year of taking them and suffered no worse than normal

slinkyjo · 16/07/2007 08:00

ive been taking citalopram for alomost two years and remember having a few problems to start with but they work really well with them, but dont ever forget to take them lol sometimes i have gone a few days without taking them and oh my god i turn into a monster shouting n screaming and cry constantly, my dp reminds me to take it then im fine. the doc keeps pushing me to come off them but by the way i go after two days without them im clearly not ready to come off them.

ShinyHarryPplHoldingPortkeys · 16/07/2007 20:51

SlinkyJo I don't think you should go two days without them when coming off them.. I think you are supposed to take them alternate days for a while to wean yourself off gently. And if you are on 20mg, then your GP will prescribe 10mg. At least this was how my GP described how I will stop taking them.

prufrock · 16/07/2007 21:19

shiny is right slinky - it's not necessarily that you are not ready to come off, just that anybody coming off cold turkey is bound to have problems. I went from 20 to 10mg, then 2 months later, when I still felt fine, started taking just 2 every 3 days, then down to alternate days, then one every 3 days. It took about 4 months to get to not taking anything and has to be done this slowly so your body can take over the chemical functions performed by the pills. I can remember going away for a weekend without my pills and being so horrible by the last day - it was a v. good job I didn't have my kids with me!

(That's not to criticise if you want to stay on btw - just be aware that how you are after 2 days without is not an indication of how you will be if slowly weaned. )

slinkyjo · 17/07/2007 07:42

good point girls lol thanks

ann12 · 18/07/2007 18:13

Has anyone tried to come off Citalopram and then gone back on them? I weaned myself off for six months, then moved house, and have had to go back on them!
