Can I refuse to be signed off work?

So I've had severe depression and anxiety for a few years now and take fluoxetine, which so far has helped. Recently though it seems to make no difference and stuff has been really tough.

I have been signed off work once before - which I didn't see coming at all and didn't ask for but accepted (I was a bit of a spaced-out mess so would have agreed to anything!)

I know I need to go to the doctors but I'm worried that once I reveal how I feel, they will insist on signing me off which would really not be a good idea as I do enjoy my job and it gives me a break from my brain!

Essentially if a doctor says they want to sign me off work, can I say no? This may be a really stupid question but I don't want to be stuck off work for 2 weeks with just my own thoughts to keep me company.

Yes you can refuse. Even if they hand you a sick note, you don't have to give it to your employer.
My doctor offered to write me one and I said I would prefer to carry on working. I discussed it with my boss and he was really supportive as he appreciated that I was at work when I could have been off sick. I was offered extra breaks if I wanted it.
