Hi. I know we are all different and what works for one won't work for another. I've been on all 3 for the past ten years and I'm no better. In fact I'm worse. I've booked an appointment to see my doctor. I'm losing hope. How long did it take you to find the tablet that worked? X

I med hopped for the best part of a year, none of the usual SSRI's worked for me, in fact Paroxetine just made my suicidal thoughts worse and Citalopram gave me hallucinations. Ended up on Amitriptyline. The dry mouth is a killer but it's worth it to feel more stable. It's very old fashioned and they won't prescribe it easily as it does have a lot of potential side effects and it is very dangerous in overdose but it does work. I only ever got a couple of weeks of dizziness and a dry mouth as far as side effects go but my doctor said that people go one of two ways with it. The majority of people find the side effects too much and give up and a smaller minority tolerate it easily and in his experience people whose depression doesn't improve with SSRIs will tolerate Tricyclics better than most.

No basis in medical research, just his own experience over the years but is an interesting trend. Might be worth giving one of them a crack. If you don't have any history of suicidal ideation, your GP would probably let you try Amitriptyline or Imipramine or something of that class.

I tried different SSRIs and am now on an SNRI (venlafaxine), which is working for me.

Keep trying Flowers

Not as in why you take it but what it helps with

I was very fortunate in that the first one I tried, Citalopram, was extremely effective. However I have family members who weren't able to find something that worked for them & eventually gave up trying & found other ways to cope. It seems like a real lottery & I don't think medical profession really know why... good luck. X

Fluoxetine is working well for me, I can function better that will do for now. I don't think it changes anything. My feelings aren't suddenly changing, but the headaches and panic attacks are far fewer.
My mood has lifted too.

Found paroxetine great (but not really prescribed nowadays), citalopram rubbish and felt like a zombie, sertraline good for a limited amount of time but stopped working after 2 years, fluoxetine made me snappy. Have just started on escitalipram and after 1 week feel as if I’ve found the holy grail of “lightness” without the side effects. Had to come pre-armed with facts and research to get my GP to prescribe it though as it’s expensive and they say “It’s virtually the same as citalopram”...even though pharmacists and numerous research articles show otherwise.

Amitriptyline does little for anxiety but has really started to lift my depression.

I've tried all of the SSRIs and most SNRIs. None worked until my thyroid was sorted. Have you had yours checked, OP?
