I feel like I’m having a nervous breakdown. I’ve been to the doctors and they prescribed citalopram. I cannot function I feel like I’m going to die. My husband has gone back to work and I’m at home with the children and due back at work myself next week.

So I’ve managed to eat and see to the little ones. Hubby has got me a GP appointment for later and spoken to the pharmacist who said the 3 day course of antibiotics should have dealt with the uti and that citalopram can be taken with the prop. I’ve thrown the old meds and have downloaded a couple of apps and will try listening to to YouTube meditations.

Sorry, reading on phone screen without glasses, glad all is ok in that respect. Sounds as if dh is excellent support which is no small thing I suppose! Take care, and well done for working so hard to get round it all - No mean feat. Brew

Colouring or something really easy

Hi Helpme5367,

We're really sorry to hear you're feeling this way.

We hope you don't mind, but when these threads are flagged up to us we usually add a link to our Mental Health resources. There are lots of organisations listed there which can give you extra support in real life. One such organisation is Anxiety UK - please do take a look at this link.

If you need to speak to someone urgently, you can also go to the Samaritans website, or email them on [email protected]. Support from other Mumsnetters is great and we can see you're getting some really good advice and support from other Mumsnetters on the thread, but it's really a good idea to seek real life help and support as well.

We also like to remind everyone that, although we're awed daily by the astonishing support our members give each other through life's trickier twists and turns, we'd always caution anyone never to give more of themselves to another poster, emotionally or financially, than they can afford to spare.

We're going to move this thread over to our Mental Health topic shortly.

Sending good wishes, OP. We really hope things start to get easier for you soon. Flowers

Haven't read the full thread but just wanted to say it is common for UTIs to make you mentally unwell. I know of a lady who had repeated EST only for it to be found out she had a UTI. You very well may need different abs hang in there until you get back to the GP, try to remember this is the UTI making you ill.

Helpme5367 · 03/01/2019 14:32

Amber - what is EST?

Just checking in on you Helpme5367

Has anyone mentioned drinking Cranberry Juice? It's supposed to be good for UTI's I think.

Hope you are OK.

Amber0685 · 03/01/2019 15:10

Electric Shock Therapy, she completely recovered once she had antibiotics for the UTI, just sent her very strange for a while.

Amber0685 · 03/01/2019 15:12

Is your gp appointment today?

Helpme5367 · 03/01/2019 17:25

Hello everyone, thanks for all the support. Yes I saw the GP earlier who gave me a weeks worth of antibiotics. Said I was also ok to use propanalol for my anxiety instead of citalopram as I said that I have anxiety not depression.

LadyB49 · 03/01/2019 18:55

I take citalopram and have done so for some time. Started at 10mg, then up to 20mg. Felt really well and reduced back to 10mg. Have remained on 10mg.... Could prob consider coming off.

When I started taking citalopram they kicked in at about 3 weeks. One day I didn't feel so flat any more and that was the turning point.
Good luck. Give them time.

JamieOliversChickenNugget · 03/01/2019 19:53

My son hallucinated on nitrofurantoin. He kept saying there were witches in his bones.
Get the UTI treated properly, THEN worry about your mental health. FWIW, Citalopram was the devils drug, the side effects were horrendous for me so it may be worth asking for another, fluoxetine was brilliant for me.

Helpme5367 · 04/01/2019 11:04

I still can’t sleep, I must have had an hour in total last night. That’s 4 nights in a row 😳
I’ve tried the meditation and a lavender room humidifier but nothing is working. I really need to sleep 😢

Hopefully by tomorrow the abs should start to work. Yes cranberry juice is good, but get the sugar free one. Hope you feel better soon.

Helpme5367 · 04/01/2019 13:29

Amber - urine sample is just back from the hospital and is all clear. It’s made me panic that there is something more sinister going on.

OP posts:
70sbaubles · 04/01/2019 13:42

Thats your anxiety

Amber0685 · 04/01/2019 14:28

I agree with Helpme you have been ill, had little sleep not surprising you feel crap. You need to try to calm down, have something to eat, try to get some sleep tonight look after yourself.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 04/01/2019 16:03

Have they told you to stop taking the antibiotics?

Helpme5367 · 04/01/2019 16:46

Anchor - no they haven’t. When I spoke to GP yesterday and told him my uretha hurt he said it could be irritation or inflammation.

OP posts:
AnchorDownDeepBreath · 04/01/2019 16:57

It's really common to get an inflamed uretha after Nitrofurantoin; I've had it a few times and tend to get it, and it's listed in the common side effects. Essentially it's a really good antibiotic for clearing infection, which it sounds like it's done, but it's strong and it can leave you feeling a bit rough.

The best way to recover is going to be to stop taking antibiotics, which will make your body feel even more under attack, and to try and calm. Would you be able to manage relaxing in a bath when your partner is home? That might help. Be gentle wiping after the toilet and only go when you need too; it's easy to convince yourself that you need to go all the time (I'm still battling that after taking nitrofurantoin in December).

Propanolol is a godsend for anxiety but can worsen constant anxiety because it creates a bit of a spiral; and if you're not sleeping, that's going to worsen your anxiety too. What will help you to feel a bit less anxious? Could you plan a really busy weekend day so you have no time to think about it?

It is really, really hard; and your mind is better at "tricking" you into feeling that you've go symptoms than you'd ever expect. They feel absolutely real - they are real, other than that they are being caused by the anxiety, and not an infection or illness. Would therapy help you, have you attempted that before? You might need to go private to get seen quickly though, unfortunately.

Helpme5367 · 04/01/2019 17:07

Anchor - the symptoms started with a sore uretha before I started on the nitro. So GP is treating me for urethritis which doesn’t show in a urine test.

The pressure and urge to wee is there still but my temp and backache have gone. I’ve had a bath and hubby is with me now trying to get me to sleep but I’m catastrophising and struggling.

Helpme5367 · 11/01/2019 14:35

Update - I wasn’t going mad thankfully. Ended up in hospital with a kidney infection.
Thank you all for your support x
