When is it depression and when is it just being unhappy?

I have most of the ’symptoms’ of depression but when i’ve read about it and the fact that it is an illness, a chemical imbalance, something that can happen to anyone etc I am wondering if that’s in fact what I have or whether I am just unhappy because of my circumstances and whether everyone would be unhappy in the same situation iyswim.

I do have ups and downs but this has been going on for years. I can’t say that I ever feel happy but sometimes I go along ok, other times I find it all very difficult.

A chemical imbalance is only one theory. What really matters is how much it affects your ability to function and how you feel about it. Regardless of a label or diagnosis, if you want your feelings or behaviour to change you can seek information and support for that. Perhaps part of that process is exploring whether you're experiencing circumstantial difficulties or if there is a deeper or alternative cause. Even if anybody would be unhappy in a situation it doesn't mean you shouldn't do anything about it. Some people can also be in very difficult circumstances and still feel positive or experience enjoyment or happiness in other areas of their life.

Depression one of the most common reasons people visit their GP. If you think you might have it, go and get checked out.
