Just that really
DD has mood swings struggles to wake up and gets stressed easily . When she gets overwhelmed with homework she can spiral
Dr has prescribed flourextine . I haven't given it to her because of side effects . Does anyone have experience of their child taking it?

How old is she?

SpoonBlender · 04/12/2018 23:51

Are the side effects worse than anxiety, stress and sleeplessness? Because that's what she has right now.

Give it a try. The SSRI family have few side effects of any significance or commonality apart from minor libido reduction, which may not be a problem for her depending on age.

It will not have been prescribed on a whim

How old is she?

The doctor will be aware of and have taken into account the possible side effects when deciding to prescribe the medication. Is there a particular reason you think you know better than a medical professional?

LEMtheoriginal · 05/12/2018 00:00

I wouldn't. Has she been offered any talking therapy to help her cope with her moods?

I say this as soneone who has been on antidepressants for years and think they are a good thing but there is too much evidence to suggest worse side effects in young peopke. Especially in terms of desire to self harm and suicidal thoughts.

How old is she?

The side effects when first taking an ssri can be pretty fucling horrendous. I think the OP is right to have concerns and should discuss them with the dr.

scoobydoo87 · 05/12/2018 00:05

I took Prozac (2nd name for the anti depressant you described) at the age of 13 and honestly the side effects are that bad she might be really tired feel abit off for a few weeks but if you're there to support her and give her some space when she needs it not grill her too much if she's lethargic and sleeping more for a while she should be good and on the mend but honesty Id let her take them doctors are very very strict about under 18's getting any type of anti depressant they won't give it unless they think it's the absolute best thing for the child's mental health

I wouldn't withhold it if it's been prescribed, but I would be pushing for talking therapy as well.

Anyone take paroxetine on here and your experience on it.
I dropped from 20mg to 10 mg and am deciding to come off it but worried about side effects as been taking it for a year.

Sorry meant to start my own thread

Children arent meant to be prescribed these meds without first undertaking 'talking therapies' They can then be prescribed them in addition to the therapy. How old is your DD?
