It is stressful, the patient feels terribly sad, hopeless, cannot cope, often develops physical symptoms.

A calm life and good, gentle support network of family and friends helps.

You're a nice friend.

Thank you for your reply Bluerussian

I will do my very best in supporting this person, they are like a closed book tho, hence why I've asked here for opinions.

What physical symptoms should I look out for ?

I've been told I have adjustment disorder. Never even heard of it until I googled it! I was really depressed yes, self harming and quite suicidal, possible pnd at the time and I took the loss of my DM pretty badly.

Probably being quite teary, I know I was, high anxiety and just generally feeling pretty crap about myself.

BippityBoppity87 · 25/11/2018 21:13

I think it's situational depression? Not 100% sure though.

Babymammy · 25/11/2018 22:06

Thank you Bippity for ur reply !
I hope ur ok Flowers

I'm not 100% sure either, it seems to be something that can cover a whole load of feelings, which is confusing. I was googling ab it too, and am I right in saying it goes away ? I didn't really get an exact answer on google for anything.

I'm doing ok. I have an appointment with the psychiatrist in just over a week with suspected bipolar disorder.

Yeah, I think it can be cormorbid? As in, it can be quite common to be coupled with anxiety and some other mood disorders I think. Again, don't quote me on it! Just from what I've read over the weeks.

SealSong · 25/11/2018 22:19

In basic terms of means poor mental health due to not coping with a major life change, usually producing low mood and or anxiety, sometimes somatic symptoms - that means physical symptoms caused by psychological stress. The actual mental and physical symptoms vary from person to person. The best thing you can do OP is just to carry on being a good friend. Time often helps.

Babymammy · 25/11/2018 22:50

Bippity yeah there was a supposed misdiagnosis of bipolar for this person in the past too ! Best of luck.

Seal thank you for your reply ! Ok that makes sense that the symptoms vary from person to person, explains why I couldn't find an exact thing on google.

That's interesting @Babymammy I'll keep that in mind! So was she misdiagnosed then later on down the line adjustment disorder? As I'm having the opposite!

Babymammy · 25/11/2018 23:54

Yeah diagnosed bipolar around 15/16 (before I knew them). I wasn't sure of the diagnosis as wasn't on meds and seemed totally normal and level headed. Then 10 years on, I start to notice behaviours which relate to bipolar (nearly every symptom of bipolar 1). Convinced them to seek help, and then I get told the doc told them the diagnosis of bipolar was incorrect all those years ago and it's adjustment disorder. Hence why I was googling so much as the symptoms still match bipolar and I couldn't see much about adjustment disorder. I'm no doctor, of course, but I'm still curious.

I think they can be quite similar, but I think also they can go hand in hand? I'm not sure though. I'll see when I have my psych appointment!

Babymammy · 26/11/2018 00:14

Yeah ur maybe right of them going hand in hand !
Good luck for ur app

Thank you @Babymammy sorry, I meant to reply back, but completely forgot. There's not really a lot about it to be honest. I'm just going by my experience and what I've been told I have!

Although I had to laugh, the reason why they came up with this conclusion is because I lost my DM and fell pregnant in the same year. Well no shit Sherlock Hmm Two big life changes in a short space of time, how do you think I'm going to react?!
